SUMMARY:Growing Herbs for Flavor\, Nutrition\, and Health - Workshop Saturday June 10th at 9am
DESCRIPTION:The CCGA Education Committee is hosting a new culinary herb workshop! \nLearn how to grow\, cook\, preserve and make simple home remedies with herbs in this informative and tasty workshop about the wide range of herbs easily grown in our Chicago gardens. Chef and farmer Sarah Mallin will lead the workshop. She is owner of Pyrite Sun and creator of The Physic Garden at Breanne Heath’s\, The Pie Patch Farm in Back of the Yards. The workshop will guide community gardeners through how to nurture herbs in their gardens and use them in the kitchen\, beverages\, and a home remedy repertoire. \nWe’ll explore the special properties of herbs that make them so flavorful and nutritious and why some people taste herbs like cilantro differently than others. Sarah will have a wide range of herb samples from The Physic Garden at The Pie Patch available for tasting\, as well as demo samples of pesto\, tea\, and tinctures. \nThe class will begin with a short lecture on the history and uses of herbs\, followed by growing and preserving advice and a sensory exploration of herb samples. Sarah will then provide samples of pesto and tea\, explaining how to make your own at home\, followed by a Q & A time. \nDate: Saturday June 10th at 10am \nLocation: Chicago Center for Green Technology (CCGT)\, 445 N. Sacramento Blvd. Chicago IL 60612. \nThe workshop is free\, but seating is limited\, so please RSVP your intention to attend HERE.

SUMMARY:The Naturally Beautiful Garden Conference
DESCRIPTION:The Naturally Beautiful Garden Conference \n12:00-5:30 p.m. on February 11\, 2017\nTriton College\, River Grove\, IL \nGet practical advice on creating stunning home gardens using layers found in native ecosystems. These layers support life: soil organisms\, insects\, birds and more.\nLandscape architect Rick Darke\, co-author with Douglas Tallamy of The Living Landscape\, and Heather Holm\, author of Pollinators of Native Plants\, will lead a half-day conference on how to design home landscapes that not only look beautiful but also support the surrounding regional ecosystem. The conference is hosted by the West Cook chapter of Wild Ones\, a national native plant organization. \nFirst\, Darke will lead the audience in an entertaining discussion of a wild landscape’s layers  (ground\, forbs\, grasses\, shrubs\, small trees\, large trees)\, and how we can use them in eye-catching\, beautiful ways. Next\, he will give advice on easy ways to maintain a native home landscape. Then\, Holm will describe the habitat and food needs of birds\, bees and pollinators\, and recommend specific native trees and shrubs that support their life cycles. \nLearn more: https://westcookwildonesconference.eventbrite.com. This conference is made possible by West Cook Wild Ones members\, our plant sale\, and PlanItGreen\, Oak Park and River Forest’s Sustainability Plan.
