Historic Climate Investments Approved with the Passage of Chicago's 2022
Budget
Openlands applauds Mayor Lightfoot and the Chicago City Council for passing
a budget that makes historic investments in the environment to support
community resilience to climate change and environmental equity for better
quality of life for all. Thank you to all who called, emailed, and
advocated for its passage!

Climate change affects the most marginalized communities in Chicago and is
not just an environmental issue - it affects our health, food and water,
economy, and national security. Investing in innovative and necessary
mitigations now is vital to ensure Chicago's ability to support its
residents and compete with other global cities in the future.

With this funding, important community-driven initiatives will be
implemented, including:


   - Planting 75,000 new trees across the City over the next five years –
   the largest tree canopy program in the City’s history. This includes
   creating job opportunities for planting and maintenance.
   - Building 20 new Spaces to Grow green schoolyards, which help reduce
   flooding in the most flood-prone communities.
   - Investing in neighborhood park improvements, including for
   beautification, recreation, and accessibility, and to install public
   broadband in locations including fieldhouses.
   - Community-driven investments in the Little Calumet River Initiative on
   and along the African American Heritage Water Trail.
   - Turning vacant lots into opportunities, streamlining the environmental
   review for all 10,000 City-owned vacant lots. This will put 4,000 of them
   into active use, including cleaning and transferring ownership of 3,000
   lots to local residents and preparing 1,000 to be developed as affordable
   homes.
   - Jumpstarting a community wealth building pilot that includes
   investments in shared equity models, such as community land trusts – giving
   historically disinvested communities more accessible and sustainable paths
   to building wealth.
