You may recall Molly and her colleagues were involved in a study of Global Wellness in Urban Chicago, which featured Cordia and the Hermitage Street Community Garden. You may find it at https://urbanwellness.fieldmuseum.org/ So, SAVE THE DATE for Visioning the Future for Our Gardens Shape the future of community gardens in Chicago by sharing your thoughts and ideas with Chicago?s planning initiative WeWill. Learn too, how community gardens support social and environmental wellbeing in numerous ways in this workshop on Saturday, July 23 at 10am at UIC in the Behavioral Science Building. This free workshop is presented jointly by the CCGA Education and Advocacy and Outreach Teams and will feature presentations by our own May Toy, as she is joined by UIC Anthropology Prof. Molly Doane. The City of Chicago will have staff on hand to help participants complete surveys for WeWill and offer swag bags to all. UIC is centrally located and easily accessed on the CTA blue line and buses, #60 or #7. We will also be looking for volunteers to guide participants once inside the building, which is built like a beehive. If you or a fellow gardener would like to volunteer, please reply to May or me or Amy in the email. Registration opens soon. They are all relatively old so some of the references to organizations may be outdated but they could still help you to know what needs to be done to get started and keep gardening. The information about the work you should do is still good. I am reaching out to you today because I think you may be a good fit for a unique project we are working on around Food Insecurity. Our team at Visit.org has partnered with Bumble (the dating app) to create volunteer events for Bumble users in 10 cities across the country. We are looking for nonprofits to collaborate with in building highly engaging, fun, unique and impactful experiences to increase food access, improve food systems, and the like. The selected date for these is Saturday, September 24th. This is a part of their IRL "in real life" event series, which includes a bunch of different fun community events (you can check out the full list of events here). These are larger events, with hopes of engaging up to 100 people, and Bumble has a budget for this project. Does this sound like something your organization might be interested in? If so, I would love to connect you with a member of our Nonprofit Team as soon as possible to discuss further. Let me know when you?re available, or use this calendly link to schedule some time. Thank you so much! Please use the link provided here to read in its entirety, especially part 2 in the piece in today's Trib written by Pulitzer-finalist investigative reporter, Michael Hawthorne, who focuses on the environment and public health. The title of the piece, *Sewage sludge contaminated with toxic forever chemicals spread on thousands of acres of Chicago-area farmland, *couldn't say it any better. https://www.chicagotribune.com/news/environment/ct-pfas-illinois-listicle-20220731-au7rjh3yerg23lzgggh3ewzz2y-list.html PFAS are man-made chemicals that have been used in industry and consumer products worldwide since the 1950s. They have been used to make nonstick cookware, water-repellent clothing, stain resistant fabrics and carpets, some cosmetics, some firefighting foams, and products that resist grease, water, and oil. Learn more at https://www.atsdr.cdc.gov/pfas/health-effects/overview.html And finally, a handy chart for seeing how it happens. Thank you Ellen Newcomer for your attention. JW or Amy, could either of you please post this in the CCGA Forum? Regards, Lorraine -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed...
