There's email to CCGA Communcations and Education with requests for help starting new community gardens in Chicago. We will all likely need to pitch in if the requests keep coming this fast. Julie wrote a helpful manual on how to start a garden and it's on our website http://chicagocommunitygardens.org/starting-a-community-garden/. It should be easier to find rather than having to start at the top and scroll from Resources there down to DIY Guides to find it. .Do we need a uniform first response to these emails to gather more information, using some of the questions in Julie's guide to establish common ground? These new gardens will need resources, seeds, soil, lumber...etc. Anyone interested in working on a draft from Julie's guide? It strikes me as the very purpose of Advocacy and Outreach to help these folks get started, but the requests aren't going to them. Communications can forward them to A&O, but I think this is a multi team response. Hope you agree. I found it very hard to find it and open it on our website. So we could just bring a manual sample or two and provide folks with how to open, find and see the manual to unload and copy it?? Also I'm going to see if I could just provide little printed copies of the "link" that they can use to find it on the site. These are the steps listed on the site: 1. Resources 2. DIY Guide 3. Starting A Community Garden I think we would start by hearing what the people there would like to do and know and chat a while to see what they would need and what we can suggest they do showing them the manual. Where do we meet in the Caldwell Woods and what time? I can contact Mr. Ortega unless someone else would like to do that. First, I have already contacted Brian Ortega of Acero Schools and Cheryl Foster of Antioch MB Church of Chicago located at 450 W. Englewood Ave. (63rd and Stewart). These are the persons requesting help with starting a community garden. My initial contact (as Education and Communications team) was to welcome their inquiry and let them know someone from Advocacy & Outreach would be in touch. (I hope this is going to be the case as A&O's purpose is just this) I also sent them contact information for GreenCorps and GreenCorps + Terma Firma, which is more aligned with community gardens. Admittedly the search for Julie's "Steps to Starting a Community Garden" is not easy to find, so Julie or all of you on A&O, please just communicate warmly, and copy and send the link at the end of this paragraph. In general practice, a manual is made available on-line, but there is usually a support contact for questions. Please, someone from A&O be that person. Julie, you created the manual so you are the best support person for contact. Amy is eager to fix the issues with access on our website, but after the conference. She is on this email thread. Here is the link http://chicagocommunitygardens.org/starting-a-community-garden/ You can also send it to them as a pdf which is attached to this email We don't have funds set aside for photocopying without approval from Angela as I understand it, nor do I think we should print this out when it can be read on-line and downloaded and printed by those making the request, if they choose. We have limited copy availability at NeighborSpace but should be reluctant to take too much advantage of this and the photocopier is pretty much always in use by GreenCorps. Here again is the contact information for the two requests: Brian Ortega, Community Affairs and Advocacy Manager Acero Schools bortega at aceroschools.org 872 202 4964 Cheryl Ferguson-Foster Antioch MB Church of Chicago 6248 S Stewart Ave, Chicago, IL 60621 cfergusonfoster at yahoo.com 312-375-7860 *Special Note:* This church was one on the list of potential awardees for the State of Illinois COVID funds to start a garden in 2020. Greg Miller of the same church participated in a WebEx virtual meeting with us; however they were not one of the final churches to receive funds., so they are reaching out again. We have a CCGA zoom room reserved for a call with you Tuesday, March15 at 5pm. You will find the link at the end of this email You'll meet and speak with some of us from both the Education team and the Advocacy and Outreach team. In advance of the virtual meeting I've attached our "Basic Steps to Starting a Garden. This document was created by Julie Samuels who will be on the call. It would be helpful if you could look through this document before Tuesday. If you are unable to make this meetup, you can email questions or concerns to us. If it is easier to share a link to the manual, it is also on our website at http://chicagocommunitygardens.org/starting-a-community-garden/ You can join our meeting with this information https://us02web.zoom.us/j/82680460687?pwd=YlJjbFdDUjVwMWp4Sm5FbytrUjhiUT09 Meeting ID: 826 8046 0687 Passcode: CCGA Dial in number: 312 626 6799 US (Chicago) Meeting ID: 826 8046 0687 Passcode: 412128 Regards, Lorraine -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... With the church groups for the State of IL, I was able to drive out and help with that. Even some of the churches who had gardens already, there were a lot of suggestions we could have offered to help improve production. It's hard to get a perspective/evaluate until you do an onsite visit. The design should also need to match what the goal of each community garden is. For the churches, it was to produce as much harvest as possible to distribute to the community. They build community with the volunteers and youth who come to help in the garden. The design would be different if it's an allocation garden . Unfortunately, I'm not expecting to be more able/mobile until Fall. Other gardens on our new map can pick them up at the conference and we check them off. There are a lot of students, some 50 of them possibly, involved in their summer coursework around social justice in food equity at Canter Middle School at 4959 S Blackstone. Of course I will respond to this email stating our keen interest with a request for more information as to what they envision for CCGA in the way of educational presentations or garden visits. If you would be interested in a classroom vivid or presentation or your garden would be willing to host a tour with this topic in mind please contact me to keep our response effective. My name is Lauren Adejumo and I work as the Lead Learning Designer with The Academy Group. The Academy Group is a local non-profit working with young people from Chicago?s most resilient communities, grades 4 through post-college employment. Our program centers on helping students become leaders of tomorrows economy and communities, and provides year-round business, social justice, advising, and academic programming. I?m reaching out in hopes that we might connect to discuss how we might partner with you all around our 5th grade summer social justice course: Food Access and Equity. We are aware of your work within the community and would love to find ways to integrate some of your expertise. At present, we anticipate having approximately fifty 5th grade students in the in-person summer program, which will run at Canter Middle School from July 5th through July 29th. If you?d be interested in connecting with our students, please let me know a few times that you?re available to speak. Thank you in advance for helping our young social justice change agents to have this powerful experience! While my suggestion to create a partnership membership for Community Gardens where passes could be shared with members wasn't approved ( though they did take note) they did share that there are now 52 FREE DAYS wherein the only cost to visit is the parking fee. Please see the below excerpt from the letter I received. Very excited as the free days in April are just in time for CPS Spring Break !!! Note, the new daily admission fees start at $ 9.95 We need to post this news to our website in a place where all can see it. Registration for a time-slot is still required. "We recently started charging admission to the Garden so that in addition to the $8.00 fee per car to park, we have a per person admission fee. That being said, we have also incorporated 52 free admission days per year (at least 2 per month and those can be found listed on our website: https://www.chicagobotanic.org/visit/free_admission_opportunities .) I think this would be a great way for your volunteers to visit the Garden. Reserving a spot for these free days can be done online or by calling 847-835-6801." Best to all.
