From lxkells at gmail.com Sat Jul 5 20:45:42 2025 From: lxkells at gmail.com (Lorraine Kells) Date: Sat, 5 Jul 2025 20:45:42 -0500 Subject: [Advocacy-outreach] Your help is needed for CCGA EVENT Listening Session #1 Message-ID: Hello everyone, This email is a call for help, particularly for a few volunteers to help at our upcoming event, the Listening Session, gathering those growers interested in a new Urban Agriculture Plan for Chicago. We've had many people fill out the survey; now we're meeting all you in person to discuss what you've told us in the surveys. We'll have two breakout sessions; each breakout group will help us envision the new ordinance to remove barriers and bring solutions, so there will be lively and informative discussions. You've all gotten the flyers, many of you have taken the survey, and some of you have probably already registered. If not, there is space available. We hope to hear back from you that you'll be available to help at our event; we need a few people to direct people to the elevators or stairs at Whitney Young HIgh School, help at the refreshment table, or a few other simple things. So let us hear from you, please. The event is Wednesday, July 9, Whitney Young Magnet High School 211 S. Laflin St., Chicago, IL 60607 6 to 7:30pm, doors open @ 5:30 pm. We'll need you there by 5:30 pm most likely. Best, Lorraine, Amy and May -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Lots of things are blooming and the shrubs we've planted in the spring are putting on a lot of new growth! I'd like to update everyone on some previous and upcoming events! *1. West Lawn Park Mother's Day Tree Planting* On May 10th, we held our Spring Community Planting Day at West Lawn Park, over 25 individuals came out to support and helped plant 30 trees, including some in front of the field house and behind Lee Elementary School by the playground! Thank you so much to everyone who came out, enjoy a few pictures below! *2. WLCC Hiatus* Unfortunately, as summer was starting to bud we lost a lot of momentum as I had to leave for Mexico for most of May and June due to a family emergency. As we're slowly getting back into a rhythm, we promise to have an amazing assortment of programs this summer! I was in Guerrero, Mexico where almost 300 species of birds are endemic, meaning they are only local to that region! The natural areas are massive and biodiversity was amazing. I saw 20+ species of butterflies and moths, frogs, toads, hummingbirds that came within 2 feet of me, and so so much more. I know we can boost the native biodiversity in West Lawn in a few short years and I'm looking forward to doing the work with you all! *3. Marquette Park Stewardship Days* We're tackling our FIRST MAJOR project of the summer with some community planting days at Marquette Park! Two stewardship days in two weeks to help beautify Marquette Park! Flyers Below! Starting this Saturday! *Where*: Meet behind Marquette Park Field House *What*: Planting 100 native plants to boost biodiversity and prevent any more erosion on the shoreline! Pruning, birdwatching, and light clean up on the second day. *When*: Saturday, July 12th and July 26th 10 AM-12PM *REMINDERS:* REMEMBER TO WATER YOUR NEWLY PLANTED TREE 15-20 GALLONS OF WATER PER WEEK! INSTALLING A RAIN BARREL IS A GREAT WAY TO SAVE MONEY, AND HELP THE ENVIRONMENT! If I've been slow to respond to emails, I apologize as there are a ton of emails to get through and we're still organizing things for this summer~ BUT I WILL GET BACK TO YOU! If you have any questions or concerns, please don't hesitate to reach out. P.S. Be on the lookout for an upcoming art poster party, and an environmental activist social mixer coming soon! In-Reply-To: References: Message-ID: Hello all, Just three days ago, I received an invitation to have CCGA table an event, the Academy for Global Citizenship's Institute Symposium, with this year?s theme of ?Growing Together: Planting the Seeds of Innovation.? It offers us an excellent opportunity to engage participants in learning more about us and the work we do. We truly need to reach out to more young people to join our committees and expand and deepen our work to build sustainable communities with our many community gardens . When we build connections with other community leaders and change makers, form partnerships, and find opportunities for collaboration, we expand our reach. There are so many issues that community gardeners face: clean soil and water access, citizen control and access. Some community gardens have been bulldozed, more are threatened. As you read through the detailed invitation, you can see we will need people to sign on to time slots. From experience, those of us who have done this can tell you, it is exciting to meet new people and you will also participate and walk around to other tables. You will meet many like minded individuals with shared missions. We can develop new pamphlets and handouts, perhaps present a demonstration - either seed viability or something similarly of value - does Resources have any plant material that will be available by September 27th. People are always grateful to have free, small plants. Angela, Gina, please note we need to provide our own table.
