I am finally able to send a draft of the Jan 21 meeting minutes. Please review them for anything that may have been left out in my very scratchy notes. CCGA Coordinating Committee Meeting Minutes Draft January 21, 2025 - 6pm on Zoom. *6:09pm Meeting called to order. Lorraine agreed to take notes and note times. There is no timekeeper.* Attending: Barb Dennis, Maria Herrera, JW Glass, Mamie Gray, Gina Jamison, Lorraine Kells, Angela Taylor, and Marsha Wyatt. Guest Tiffany Makowski formerly with Nichols Park Advisory Council, Hyde Park Motion to accept previous meeting minutes made by JW, seconded by Angela. *Project/Event Updates * Angela stated the ad hoc project for Julie Samuels? Memorial is still working and made a request for a specific Go Fund me campaign for the memorial. JW gave an open invitation to everyone to submit articles and stories for our Newsletter, pieces for the website. New submissions are event centric so are timely, news about grant opportunities is important. *6:31pm Committee Reports* *Resources and Distributions* CCGA Resources Committee will hold a special workshop/get-together in winter with a houseplant distribution. Event date or venue is not yet determined. *Education Committee* No Report *6:54 pm Advocacy and Outreach* Discusssion of how people communicate with us. Lorraine stated that it was not being handled well. JW reported that we have 3 lists, mailing lists, and the email info at chicagocommunitygardens.org which is distributed to 10 people who requested to receive this email. People also reply to the committees as the contact email is one the website. Lorraine requested a copy of who receives the info@ email. JW said he would comply with that request. Angela stated that not just anyone should reply and questioned, if someone replies, what is our process? ?Reply all? was suggested to prevent multiple responses. Angela further stated that we build our outreach through many of these inquiries, and we need protocol. JW stated that we did not have time to discuss this but Marsha insisted we must make time for it because we need a process. We cannot ignore this if a few more minutes are necessary *Finance Committee* No Report *Communications Committee * JW?s report was given in the Projects and Events section and statements during Adv&Outreach Committee Report *7:05pm Motion to adjourn* made my Angela, seconded by Barb -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... I have tentatively booked a room for March 18 6-7pm at the Richard M Daley branch, Meeting Room (max. 45 people) 733 N. Kedzie Avenue Chicago, IL 60612. It is on the #52 CTA bus route, but it does not have a parking lot. Is this a good fit for our March 18 meeting? We will likely have a discussion and motion moving forward. In our second year, we hope to make an even bigger impact on the local community and collaborate on meaningful projects to beautify the neighborhood and bring nature into our hearts. With that being said, we do have quite a number of updates to give y'all about upcoming events + projects. First, *we are having our first spring meeting next week*. Please refer to the flyer below. *NEXT MEETING: **WEDNESDAY MARCH 26TH* *WEST LAWN PUBLIC LIBRARY * *4020 W. 63RD STREET* *6-7.30 PM* Updates: *1) Tree Planter's Grant With Openlands- West Lawn Park* We've begun canvassing and asking homeowners to request a free tree to be planted in front of their home! Please refer your neighbors who live *within .5 miles of West Lawn Park* (4233 W 65th Street) Here is the link to request a tree and you can refer to the Openlands flyer attached below. We had almost 70 volunteers come out last year to our Spring planting day at Richardson Middle School. *Tentatively scheduled for May 10th @ 9 AM* *2) Native Shrub Giveaway* We're giving out native shrubs again this year with more species variety and 3x the quantity! These shrubs will be delivered by Mid-April and require a site inspection prior. We will plant and give you care instructions for them. FREE OF CHARGE. Please message back to reserve a shrub, they will be going like hotcakes!!! *Highlights* include elderberry, hazelnut, two kinds of fruit trees, and various dogwoods. Please refer to the slide deck below which will be added with more details. While you can keep most of these shrubs 3-6 feet tall, *the real magic happens when you let them grow 6-10 feet tall* as local native birds will start to use them for nesting sites. We will make sure each shrub is appropriate for your site. We are also asking them to be planted IN FRONT of your home so everyone can view and enjoy! *3) Marquette Park News* The red-winged blackbirds are back and have been lining up all along the lagoon calling out to female mates. We're anticipating the arrival of the herons (Great Blue Heron, Black-Crowned Night Heron) any time now! On a typical walk, you'll find Cardinals, Chickadees, a lone Hairy Woodpecker, Mallard ducks, Canada geese, and plenty of Robins. I saw an American Tree Sparrow on my last walk and while with our Vice President, Evelyn Alvarez, we heard at least two American Woodcocks! Meep! We'd like to *plan a bird walk* *soon* to observe Spring Migration as well as a massive park clean up. There's plenty of trash and debris left over the winter and we'd love to keep the park in good order for everyone to enjoy. *4) Schools, Libraries, & Churches* We're working with local schools, libraries, and churches to implement native gardens on their campus grounds. If you are a CPS teacher or think your church would be interested in implementing a pollinator garden please reach out to me directly. Finally, We'd also like to thank everyone who joined our Winter Sowing event in January. It was an amazing event. We will provide a final opportunity for winter sowing during an open hours event, TBA. While there's plenty more going on behind the scenes and more news waiting to be announced, I will stop here for now... If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to reach out. Thank you for reading if you've made it this far, and please enjoy the rest of your week. -Adolfo Castrejon 2025 WLCC Shrub Giveaway Adolfo Castrejon Founder Linksite: https://campsite.bio/westlawnconservationclub Instagram: @westlawnconservationclub Image.png -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... We were hoping you or someone from your organization could participate to discuss your work and how other communities across the state could scale garden projects to foster healing and kinship. Communications team ---------- Forwarded message --------- From: Echale Ganas Program via Communications < communications at chicagocommunitygardens.org> Date: Tue, Mar 25, 2025 at 9:59?PM Subject: [Communications] Community Garden Collaboration with ?chale Ganas To: Dear Chicago Community Gardeners Association, I hope this email finds you well! My name is Alma Tatem, and I am reaching out on behalf of ?chale Ganas, a mentorship program dedicated to supporting and empowering high school students as they navigate their academic and professional journeys. Our program focuses on fostering leadership, community engagement, and personal growth, and we are always looking for meaningful ways to give back to the Chicago community. We would love to organize a volunteer day with one of the incredible community gardens in your network. Our goal is to bring our mentors and mentees together for a day of service, learning, and connection with nature. We are hoping to schedule this event on a weekend in late April to the middle of May and would greatly appreciate any recommendations for a local garden that could use extra hands during that time. Please let us know if there are any opportunities available, and we?d be happy to coordinate further to ensure we can be helpful in the best way possible. Thank you for the work you do in maintaining these important green spaces, and we look forward to the possibility of working together! This summer's theme is "green"/sustainability/gardening, and the expo is a tabling event that will feature local organizations and training programs along with other rooms for volunteer opportunities. We'd love to have someone from Chicago Community Gardeners Association to share information on training or job programs. The Expo will be at the Harold Washington Library Center (400 S State St) from 3-6pm on Weds, June 25th and is open to the general public. We're still in the planning stages and don't yet have a flyer, but please let me know if you have any questions. Thank you for your consideration!
