To whom this may concern at the Chicago Community Gardeners' Association,
My name is Andrew Leith. I am a 4th year doctoral candidate in anthropology
at Northwestern University. My background is in historical archaeology. I
am researching heavy metal soil toxicity in urban landscapes and more
specifically the historic sources of this toxicity and how community
gardeners are grappling with this legacy in their efforts to create
healthier neighborhood environments. I have been working with Rosalyn Owens
at Bronzeville Neighborhood Farm since 2023. Hilary Mac Austin from Hello
Howard neighborhood farm suggested that I reach out to you. I would love to
introduce myself, to learn more about Chicago Community Gardeners'
Association, and to see if you might have suggestions for partnering
community garden organizations that may be interested in discussing my
research and possibly participating as sites where I map and measure the
gardens, investigate historical neighborhood maps, take soil samples, and
discuss remediation / garden health efforts over the years.
Thank you for your time. I appreciate your consideration and would be
delighted to chat more if you are interested.
My best,
Andrew Leith
