August 2020 Newsletter Visit to see the beauty of the summer season in our outdoor gardens! Hardy hibiscus, 'Lord Baltimore' can be found between the bull statues in the City Garden. Getting outdoors in nature provides proven physical and mental health benefits, especially during periods of stress. We are now open to the public with timed entry reservations! Plan a visit to explore 10 acres of nature and lose yourself in the summer splendor! NATURE PLAY FOR FAMILIES Sidewalk Chalk Sidewalk chalk is one of the signs of the summer season and one of our favorite open-ended materials for play. We’ve tested out a recipe for making your own chalk and ideas for play at home. We recommend these activities for children ages two years and up. Watch this video tutorial and the accompanying activity sheet that includes some of our favorites such as: Sidewalk Chalk X-Ray, Shadow Tracing, Life-size Chalk Plants and Plant Cheerleader. Click here for the pdf activity! Accessibility Notes For younger children, or those with issues gripping things, try using larger molds to create chalk in shapes that may be easier to hold and manipulate. We recommend looking for silicone molds used to shape candies and baked goods. If you have any breathing or lung issues, make sure to wear a mask while working with dry plaster of Paris. Bromeliad Babies Have fun pretending to be a rainforest frog in this obstacle course game while learning about bromeliads! Recommended for ages 4-13. This activity gives you background on the relationship between bromeliads and tree frogs, the supplies, set up and questions to guide you for some nature play at home! Click here for the pdf activity Playdough Impressions One of our favorite materials used in family programs at the Conservatory is playdough because of its endless potential for play. Watch this video to learn how to make your own playdough at home and then try the Playdough Impressions activity! Playdough Impressions Activity Use playdough to build pretend gardens, make stick bugs, and for this activity we use it to understand and explore natural textures from the world around us. We recommend this activity for children of 18 months and up. Click here for pdf activity. Accessibility Notes Not everyone will enjoy the sensation of playdough on their hands, especially for those with sensory processing issues. For these learners, we recommend trying the activity wearing a pair of dishwashing gloves or using pinchers to manipulate the different materials. For those with gluten allergies, try making a gluten-free playdough recipe. Share your photos or videos with us on social media by tagging us and use #GPCATHOME . We'd love to know what resources you are enjoying at home! Digital Tours Summer Coloring Sheets Resource Center Nature education for young children and families is made possible in part by a grant from the PNC foundation.
