Golden Hour, Sweet Saturday, Member Plant Sale and more!  ‌ FEBRUARY 2020 NEWSLETTER SHOWS & EVENTS   *FREE, unless otherwise noted  2020 Spring Flower Show: Golden Hour Exhibit on display Friday, February 14 through Sunday, May 10 To celebrate Valentine’s Day and the opening of our Spring Flower Show the Garfield Park Conservatory is staying open late! Open 9am-8pm on February 14. Golden Hour will celebrate the golden light of dawn and dusk with colorful displays of azalea, hydrangea, and calibrachoa. Special features this year include immense hanging baskets overflowing with spring flowers, and two rope-art displays depicting the vibrant rays of the sun. Share your photos with us and use #goldenhourgpc! Looking for date night plans? Eat your heart out with a special pre-fixe dinner at Inspiration Kitchens before or after a visit to the Conservatory! Reservations available through 8pm at Inspiration Kitchens. 3-course prix fixe menu – $30 per person. Click here to make a reservation. Sweet Saturday Saturday, February 15 from 12pm-3pm Cost: FREE with suggested donation of $10 per adult and $5 per child / FREE for GPCA Members Discover new tropical treats and taste your way through the fruits and vines of the Garfield Park Conservatory. This drop-in event will let your whole family try some sweet treats while learning about plants in our collection. From chocolate and vanilla, to banana and papaya, your family will love this Valentine’s weekend event! There will be crafts and activities for all ages. Make sure to check out our kid-chef friendly cooking demonstration with food from Imperfect Produce. Plus, live music from The Dreamtree Shakers on the Sweet Saturday Stage in Horticulture Hall. Member families will have access to the Member Lounge, where everyone can sit, have some coffee, and make a tasty treat! Members Annual Plant Sale Saturday, February 29 in the Jensen Room 10am-1pm (or while supplies last!) This year our Annual Plant Sale is for Members only. Shop our sale to stock up on plants grown by Conservatory volunteers, featuring succulents, tropicals and other house plants ready for new homes! Prices start at $5. A list of plant varieties will be available on our website and emailed to members in advance of the sale. This year, we’ll also have a limited quantity of closed terrariums for sale. Learn More A Genius of the Spot On display in the Fern Room through February 9 Surprise, delight, joy or awe? What have you experienced in the Fern Room? For over 100 years the spirits of the Fern Room have inspired us. Now, “A Genius of the Spot” celebrates them. This temporary exhibit by artist Ava Carney will be on display through February 9. Come explore and find five sculpted works and create a new memory in a fresh, yet familiar way. Learn more. Parks & (Re)Creation: Community Arts in the Chicago Park District Saturday, February 8 from 2-3pm Join us for A Genius of the Spot Artist Talk with artists Ava Carney, Rianna Sprague, and Magritte Emannuel Nankin here at the Conservatory on Saturday February 8. Free, please register so we can save you a spot. RSVP This program is supported in part by a grant from the Illinois Arts Council Agency. 2nd Wednesday Lecture: Exploring Unsung Pioneers of Science with Urban Roots Wednesday, February 12 from 6pm-7:30pm Join us and our Urban Roots Teen Docents as we celebrate Black History Month by highlighting the works of several black pioneers of science whose contributions to ecological and plant science have been lost in time. Urban Roots Teen Docents and School and Teen Program Coordinator, Malcolm Townsend, will explore the unsung work of Black ecologists, nutritionists and zoologists and more. RSVP Urban Horticulture Demo Cart: Seed Starting Demo Saturday, February 22 from 11am-12:30pm The groundhog's verdict is in: we're due for an early Spring! Stop by our Urban Horticulture Demo Cart for tips on how to jump-start your garden by growing your own seedlings indoors. Our Plant Propagation Program Volunteers will show simple hacks for making your own seed starting kits using recyclable materials and highlight best practices for growing healthy seedlings. Music Under Glass: Bomba Con Buya Wednesday, February 26 from 6pm-7pm Bomba con Buya is a Chicago-based ensemble that aims to preserve and advance bomba. Developed during the 18th century among the island’s African descendants, bomba is Puerto Rico’s oldest surviving music and dance form. Buya means “good spirit” in Taino, and the group strives to embody this idea. Free and open to the public; RSVPs are encouraged, but not required. This program is supported by grants from the Illinois Arts Council Agency, CIBC and The MacArthur Fund for Arts and Culture at Prince. ADULT PROGRAMS Winter Tree ID Walk Friday, February 21 from 10am-12pm Cost: Free; pre-registration is required Learn about city trees with Openlands’ TreeKeeper Program Manager, Al DeReu. Al will explore the trees of beautiful and historic Garfield Park. Interested children are welcome, but must be accompanied by an adult.  REGISTER Intro to Open Terrariums with Succulents Saturday, March 7 from 10am-12pm Cost: $80 / $64 GPCA Members + Volunteers Join Emilia Arellano, GPCA Greenhouse Coordinator, for an introductory hands-on class on open terrariums. Participants will receive step by step instruction as they make their own one gallon terrarium using succulents that require medium to indirect bright light and will learn best practices for optimal plant health. Class fee includes all materials. If you'd like to be considered for a scholarship, click here. REGISTER Yoga Saturdays; February 8 & February 22 9am-10am Cost: Free; $5 suggested donation at the door Root down and stretch out with yoga in Horticulture Hall! We offer guided yoga every 2nd and 4th Saturdays. Please BYO-mat. After class meander through the gardens as you feel rejuvenated and then head over to Inspiration Kitchens for brunch! Join us for free, hands-on nature education in the Elizabeth Morse Genius Children's Garden. Join us on 2/8, 2/9, and 2/17 in our Play and Grow Garden for games, fort building, and high-energy activities outside. Come prepared for outdoor adventures geared towards ages 7+ with our Nature Education staff. Learn more. SCHOOL PROGRAMS New Resource Backpacks for Partner Schools! We have launched our new Resource Backpacks! These backpacks are chock full of resources to explore including lesson plans, microscopes, a seed lab, specimens from the Conservatory and more for use back in the classroom. These backpacks are being piloted with our 8 West Side partner schools and in 2021 will be available to all visiting school groups. Contact groups at garfieldpark.org to learn more.
