MARCH 2020 NEWSLETTER SHOWS & EVENTS     *FREE, unless otherwise noted  Spring Flower Show: Golden Hour On display through Mother's Day, May 10 Visit the Show House and step into spring! Golden Hour focuses on the light of dawn and dusk with colorful displays of azaleas, hydrangeas, calibrachoa and more. Plus, two rope-art displays depicting the vibrant rays of the sun. Learn more. A Genius of the Spot On display through March 8 Meander through the Fern Room and discover five site specific sculptures by artist Ava Carney. Inspired by the quote from Lorado Taft displayed at the entrance to the Fern Room, this temporary exhibit celebrates the surprise, delight and joy of the Fern Room spirit that continues to inspires us. JazzCity 2020: Soul to Soul - A Celebration of Eddie Harris: Women of Chicago Jazz Friday, March 6 from 7pm-9pm Two strong leaders in the Chicago Jazz scene lead quartets that showcase original compositions and beloved standards. Presented by Jazz Institute of Chicago and the Chicago Park District, this concert is free and open to the public. Learn more. East Garfield Park Community Celebration Tuesday, March 10 from 6pm-8pm Cost: Free, please register Join us for the debut of "A Blueprint For Community Action" the culmination of an 8-month process. Beginning in 2019, East Garfield Park residents gathered to preserve affordability and prevent displacement in their neighborhood, part of a unique community-driven pilot led by the Garfield Park Community Council, the Institute of Housing Studies at DePaul University, and the Metropolitan Planning Council. This process, called Preserving Affordability Together (PAT), is an example of a Chicago neighborhood organizing proactively against the potential negative impacts of catalytic investments. He is an educator and host of The Visual Desk—a bi-weekly editorial support group for freelance visual journalists interested in a more inclusive approach to serve their communities. RSVP One Earth Film Festival - UseLess: A Documentary About Food & Fashion Waste Saturday, March 14 from 11am-1pm Cost: Free, please register One Earth Film Festival returns to Garfield Park Conservatory with a full-length feature film with a panel discussion to follow. In the documentary “UseLess,” the filmmakers try to find out why food and fashion waste has become a pressing social and environmental problem, and what we can do to change. Register Al Raby Student Art Show and Sale Monday, March 16 from 11am-2:30pm This one-day art exhibition will feature work by students from Al Raby High School.Take home an original artwork and support the next generation of Chicago artists! Paintings, drawings, and sculptures will be available for sale in the Community Room. Learn more. Music Under Glass: Cherchez la Femme Wednesday, March 25 from 6pm-7pm Cost: Free, please RSVP Cherchez la Femme is a duo, made up of co-founders Lisa Goethe-McGinn (flutes) and Erica Lessie (cello). They will present a concert experience of music inspired by nature for flute and cello by women composers. From scenic lands to butterflies to lush gardens, this program contains works that evoke the power of nature through music. Chicago Bonsai Club 3rd Wednesdays, March - October from 6pm-8pm Discover the ancient art of growing bonsai from the Chicago Bonsai Club, a chapter of the Midwest Bonsai Society. Bring your bonsai trees to work on or just come to learn. ADULT PROGRAMS Intro to Open Terrariums with Succulents Saturday, March 7 from 10am-12pm Cost: $80 / $64 Members and Volunteers Join Emilia Arellano, GPCA Greenhouse Coordinator for an introductory, hands-on class on open terrariums for adults. Participants will receive step by step instruction as they make their own one gallon terrarium using succulents that require medium to indirect bright light and will learn best practices for optimal plant health. Class fee includes all materials. REGISTER Natural Pigments & Dyes Series 6 week course starting March 22 Cost: $240 / $192 Members and Volunteers Interested in learning about natural pigments & dyes? Check out our new six week series open to all ages! Working collaboratively, participants will learn the fundamentals of natural dyeing- the process, the materials (fibers), the plants — covering multiple styles of hot and cold process dyes, as well as methods for direct color transfer. This knowledge will be applied to a project of their choosing, utilizing an array of fibers techniques covered in the class. Each student brings with them an innate set of skills and perspective which will be encouraged throughout the series, and personal style and self-expression are emphasized. REGISTER DIY Indoor Herb Garden Wednesday, April 15 from 6:30pm-8pm Cost: $65 / $52 Members and Volunteers Join us for a hands-on workshop and make your own indoor herb garden! Using upcycled and pre-cut wine bottles, you will assemble three planters with easy to care for herbs and learn how to keep your herbs healthy as they grow indoors. Special thanks to Cream Wine Company and Vin Chicago for donating bottles for the class! REGISTER Bee Package Installation Saturday, March 21 from 2:30pm-3:30pm Cost: $65 / $52 Members and Volunteers Are you a brand new beekeeper or want to brush up on your skills before the season starts? This new hands-on class will teach you how to install your bees. This class will take place in our apiary and will include an actual installation of package bees. We’ll also cover topics of feeding, adding room to your colonies and management over the first 6-8 weeks. REGISTER Save the date for our 11th Annual Bee Forum! Sunday, June 28. Every workshop will be a full hour and you and your family will receive a book of information on the workshop topic. Learn more. URBAN ROOTS This past month four of the Urban Roots teens presented their Black History Month project, The Unsung Heroes of Science, at our 2nd Wednesday Lecture. After their presentations they engaged in a public discussion on what they learned. Next month, we will begin recruitment for the 2020 cohort of teen docents to start the Urban Roots paid internship this summer. Principal funding for Urban Roots has been provided by the Institute of Museum and Library Studies (IMLS) [MA20-16-0031-16]. Additional funding provided by: Advocate Bethany Community Health Fund, After School Matters, Bank of America Foundation, Chicago Park District, Chicago Public Schools Career and Technological Education (CTE), the Dr. Scholl Foundation, Fairlife and Impact Grants Chicago. Learn more.   SEED & SCHOOL PROGRAMS We are in year 3 of our new Student Engagement and Educational Development (SEED) program. We partner with 8 West Side schools to bring more students on free field trips and enhance the science education that we offer. Last month we welcomed a school group from GR Clark, one of our West Side Partner Schools, and students used the Adaptations themed experience. Click here to check out our themed resources!
