NOVEMBER 2020 HAPPENINGS FLEUROTICA SIP + REWIND A Virtual Retrospective + Botanical Cocktail Class Tuesday, November 17 from 6pm-7pm Join us for a virtual retrospective look at the FLEUROTICA fashions from our signature fundraising event over the years and a botanical cocktail class! We hope you will join us and make it work from home. Learn how to craft a botanical cocktail and then sit back, take a sip, rewind and enjoy a retrospective slideshow of years past. Sign Up for Ask A Master Gardener Beekeeping with Dr. Samuel Ramsey - Virtual Lecture Wednesday, November 18 from 6pm-8pm Join Dr. Samuel Ramsey for a discussion on bees and the Varroa mite, which feed on honey bee fat body, not hemolymph. What’s happened since that discovery? What have we done to make that information more than just interesting trivia? The USDA Bee Research Laboratory is working on figuring out precisely how these findings can be weaponized against the greatest global pest to bees. Drawing Desert Plants; A Virtual Senior Series This program is funded by grants from Aroha Philanthropies and The Illinois Arts Council Agency. Beekeeping with Dr. Humberto Boncristiani - Virtual Lecture Wednesday, December 2 from 6pm-8pm Join Dr. Humberto Boncristiani in a virtual discussion on beekeeping. Research points to multi-factor causes to explain the decline in the honey bee population, but without a doubt, the role of Varroa mite and especially the viruses this dangerous honey bee pest transmits is considered the main problem in beekeeping nowadays. He will go over the fascinating aspect of the interaction between honey bees, Varroa mites, and viruses in an easy-to-understand way. The theme/subject matter of the printmaking class will be selected by the teaching artist, but should relate to nature and draw inspiration from the Garfield Park Conservatory. This incredible initiative is led by amazing youth from By The Hand Club for Kids who sought to uplift their community and bring fresh produce to the neighborhood.
