GPC Black History Month Digital Experience Learn about Black History through the lens of the Conservatory's plant collection. This digital experience makes connections to people who shaped history in America as well as right here in Chicago. Learn About Black History Through Our Plant Collection Live Virtual Tour: Palm House $5 per registration link; Free for Members  Wednesday, February 17; 12pm-12:30pm Join a Conservatory staff member for a 30-minute virtual tour of the Palm House! Learn about the plants in the room, how we care for them, and some Conservatory history. Time permitting, we may even peek into another room! Automated live captioning is available. Register for Palm House Tour Black History Month Virtual Field Trips Join a GPC educator for our field trip to get inspired by plants and their connections to Black Americans and Black history. As we learn about these plants and people, we will ask your students to think about their aspirations and help them to get inspired! Free for CPS Title 1 Schools. Virtual Beekeeping Lecture – Science Projects Wednesday, February 3; 6pm-8pm Free; Donations appreciated Part of the enjoyment of beekeeping comes from experimenting and trying new things. Some take it a step further and create their own science projects using bees. Join us as we share fun science projects done by students Sophie Donnellan and Raina Jain. Coming Summer 2021: The Artist's Garden Celebrates the Still Life Paintings of Charles Ethan Porter The show in the Artist’s Garden this year will feature the incredible African American still life painter Charles Ethan Porter. Many of us may be unaware of his beautiful art and we seek to change that as we focus our show in the Artist's Garden around his work. The garden will be filled with plants and flowers that can be found in his still life paintings. Strawberries, carnations, violets, sunflowers and common oats are just a few of the plants that will be featured in our exhibit. Appropriate for families with students in preschool-4th grade. Field trips are led by a live educator at the Conservatory. Pre-registration is required and space is limited. URBAN ROOTS REMOTE STUDENT PROJECTS During the 2020-2021 school year, the Urban Roots students worked remotely due to COVID-19. However, that did not stop the students from learning and sharing their knowledge, just like they would have while giving a tour. They worked in groups and created informational media content all about plants! Check out some of the podcasts and videos that they created to share their knowledge with the world! This program will provide $5,000 grants to minority-owned small business in neighborhoods on the West Side who have been severely impacted by COVID-19.
