Dear Lorraine,
Please join us for a town hall on the proposed Managed Native Garden
Registry Ordinance for the City of Chicago to get the scoop on this newly
proposed ordinance.
*Date:* Tuesday, March 2
*Time:* 7 - 8 p.m.
*Location:* Zoom
*R**egister: https://ilenviro.salsalabs.org/nativegardensth/index.html

This new ordinance protects residents with native gardens and landscaping
from unwarranted citations, ticketing and fines under the existing weeds
and nuisance ordinance.
But why is it needed you might ask?
Since Chicago’s Department of the Environment was dissolved in 2011, weed
citations have increased, resulting in a number of high-profile cases where
native gardeners were fined $600.
Residents and local sustainability organizations have been victims, which
has discouraged native plantings that can reduce basement flooding, help
purify the air, and provide habitat for iconic creatures like the monarch
butterfly. The Managed Native Garden Registry would allow Chicagoans to
register planted native gardens on their properties at no cost, shielding
them from these citations and fines.
At the town hall, you can learn more about the proposed native gardens
registry and ask any questions you may have. Representatives from the
offices of co-sponsoring aldermen and the Department of Planning and
Development will be present.
See you then!
Collen Smith
Deputy Director
*P.S. In the meantime, you can take action now to let your alderman know
that you support this ordinance and want them to vote in favor >>*
