But, we look forward to opening soon so we can be that place for you. In the meantime, we are more committed than ever to be a place of respite, hope, and learning as we enter 2021. We appreciate our resilient community and everyone who visited our outdoor gardens over the past year. We are thankful for our partnerships to help provide local produce offerings, digital education, and engaging opportunities. Free for GPCA Members. Saturday, January 9 is the last day to join a Conservatory staff member for a 30-minute virtual tour of the Winter Flower Show: Gratitude. The tour includes a variety of camera angles and a wealth of information about the growing habits and care that go in to Poinsettias, the history of flower shows at Garfield Park Conservatory, and much more! Time permitting, we may even peek into another room!! Sustainable Seed Starting & Potting Mixes Class Virtual Intro to Air Plants Saturday, January 30 from 11am-12pm Review the basics of air plants and demonstrate a few plant-friendly display options that do not rely on glue. Kits are available for purchase to follow along and practice. The last day to order our optional kit is 1/ 25, and 1/29 is the last day to register. Mindful Living Pop Up Sale Printmaking: A Virtual Senior Series Mondays from 10am-12pm starting February 8 Registration Closes January 29 Join Teaching Artist and Printmaker Sarita Garcia for an 8-week online printmaking course for adults age 55+! Create one of a kind prints using leaves from your garden, sew printed textiles for your own garden tool bag, and make printing inks using foods from your kitchen. Virtual Beekeeping Lecture – Observation Hives Wednesday, January 27 from 6pm-8pm Free; Donations appreciated An observation hive allows us to look in on the daily life of a honey bee colony and learn more about them, without disturbing the bees. Join us as beekeeper Henry Long tells us what it's like to have bees living in his house! Register for Observation Hives Virtual Beekeeping Lecture – Science Projects Wednesday, February 3 from 6pm-8pm Free; Donations appreciated Beekeeping can be a fun and rewarding hobby. Part of the enjoyment comes from experimenting and trying new things. Some take it a step further and create their own science projects using bees. Join us as we share fun science projects done by students Sophie Donnellan and Raina Jain. Register for Virtual Beekping Science Projects Ask a Master Gardener on Zoom Monday, January 18, from 5:30-6:30pm Free; Donations appreciated Join us for this monthly forum to have your gardening questions answered by a University of Illinois Extension Master Gardener! Spend the time with Head Beekeeper Marcin Matelski to learn the basics of beekeeping: equipment, hive design and construction, bee biology and behavior, bee management, and bee products. Annual February Plant Sale Virtual Winter Tree ID Walk with Openlands Friday, February 26 from from 10am-11am Free; Donations appreciated Virtually explore the trees of beautiful and historic Garfield Park in the winter. Pre-registration is required so we can send you the link. All donations will be split 50/50 between Openlands and Garfield Park Conservatory Alliance. Register by 2/26 at 10am CT. Register for Virtual Winter Tree ID NATURE ACTIVITIES FOR ALL AGES Download our printable activity materials to learn more about plants, nature, and everything in between! Whether it’s at home with the family, in the classroom with your students, or during a visit to the Conservatory, we’ve developed games, activities, and lesson plans that are sure to be favorites for kids of all ages. Activities and Lesson Plans Nature education for young children and families is made possible in part by a grant from the PNC foundation. VIRTUAL FIELD TRIPS WITH GPC Virtual Field Trip for Homeschool Families: Adaptations Monday, January 25 from 10am-10:45am $5 per ticket; only 1 needed per screen Led live by a GPC educator! Take your homeschooled students on a fascinating journey through time as we explore how plants have adapted to different environments throughout the years! Appropriate for families with students in 5th-12th grade. Pre-registration is required and space is limited. Book The Adaptations Field Trip Virtual Field Trip for Homeschool Families: Intro to Plants Tuesday, February 16 from 10am-10:45am $5 per ticket; only 1 needed per screen This virtual field trip for homeschool families encourages students to explore sensory elements of a large variety of plants. Appropriate for families with students in preschool-4th grade. Field trips are led by a live educator at the Conservatory. Pre-registration is required and space is limited. Book The Intro to Plants Field Trip This project was made in part by the Institute of Museum and Library Services. Additional funding provided by PNC, the Seabury Foundation, and the Dr. Scholl Foundation. The new Student Engagement and Educational Development (SEED) program was made possible in part by the Institute of Museum and Library Services [MA10-17-0193-17] with support from the PNC Foundation.  Virtual Field Trips for Schools Join us for a virtual visit with live educators to see the plants up close and learn about pollination, plant adaptations, and more! One Pre-K teacher said, “The team did an outstanding job in creating a remote, yet hands-on, experience for our children.” More details about the field trip topics and how to book can be found online.
