Federal Government Green Infrastruture Funding During A Crisis
(Crain's Chicago Business)
Commissioner DuBuclet's article in Crain's Chicago Business highlights how local agencies can not address issue plaguing our water infrastructure alone. The federal government has played and can play a key role by stepping up to address issues surrounding green infrastructure during times of crisis. The Green Project Reserve was a result of billions of dollars being set aside by the Federal government as a result of the 2009 Recession.

"MWRD's investment in these programs is critical, but we need federal funding to realize the full potential that localized water strategies hold. As the country navigates the pandemic crisis, harnessing 21st-century solutions like green infrastructure to solve 21st-century problems should be an essential part of our communities' economic recovery. To achieve this, we need renewed federal support for local public water utilities' sustainable water investments."

7 year Microbiome Project Concludes
Scientists with the MWRD and Argonne National Laboratory have concluded a seven-year Microbiome Project resulting in an unprecedented look into the microbes that impact the quality of the Chicago Area Waterway System (CAWS).

The
CAWS Microbiome Project puts the MWRD and Argonne at the forefront of environmental research by examining the microbial communities at the molecular level, addressing sources of contamination and healthy water systems. This study represents the most comprehensive and longest characterization of the microbiome of an urban waterway yet attempted.
