Honoring Black art, horticulture staff took Charles Ethan Porter's still life paintings and transformed them into beautiful garden displays. The land is power and land can provide much-needed resources, healing, and restoration to Black, Indigenous and other People of Color. Programming and restoration of preserves through community engagement with BIPOC communities have to be met with restorative justice. Origami Open House Chicago Bonsai Club Wednesday, October 20; 6pm-7:30pm Free Come learn about the ancient art of growing bonsai from the Chicago Bonsai Club, a chapter of the Midwest Bonsai Society. Bring your bonsai trees to work on or just come to watch. Potting soil and wire will be provided, and some plant materials and pots will be available at a nominal cost. You do not need a reservation to access the session. If you’d like to visit the Conservatory before or after joining this program, please book a reservation here. Learn More Ask A Master Gardener In Person Saturdays; 10:30am-1pm Free Most Saturdays (except holiday weekends), the University of Illinois Extension Ask a Master Gardener table is located at the Conservatory to answer your questions about plants. In nice weather, they will be located outside in the Sensory Garden. In inclement weather, they can be found in the Show House. To access the table, you will need to book a reservation to the Conservatory. Ask A Master Gardener In Person! OCTOBER NATURE PLAY KIT Theme: Roots & Decomposers Saturday, October 16th; 10am-1pm Free; Registration Required Register to pick up a Nature Play Kit at the Conservatory! These kits include all you need to create a nature-based craft. October's theme is Roots and Decomposers. A number of kits are set aside for Garfield Park residents and community organizations. All kits come with instructions in English and Spanish, plus a link to video instruction. Get Your Nature Play Kit Nature education for young children and families is made possible in part by a grant from the PNC foundation. VIRTUAL FIELD TRIPS For Groups & Schools Free For CPS Title 1 Schools Choose your own adventure on our virtual field trips led by Garfield Park Conservatory Nature Ed staff! Themes include Intro to Plants, Pollination, Black History, Adaptations and Plant Reproduction. Take your group on a fun, educational adventure at the Conservatory! The Urban Roots teen docents successfully completed another summer! They are amazing. The summer was spent growing their STEM skills, taking enrichment classes with awesome partners like Ignition Community Glass, AFRORACK and Music Moves Chicago, all while becoming experts in the exhibit Still Life in Real Life. They gave tours of the exhibit in the Artist's Garden dropping plant knowledge left and right, and amplifying the artist Charles Ethan Porter. Learn more about Urban Roots here. This free event for Garfield Park residents includes food, crafts and fun. Costumes encouraged! The Hatchery is located at 135 N. Kedzie Ave. West Garfield Park Food Study $50 Compensation UIC is hosting a community-based study that involves talking in a group about food in your area. Adults 18+ who live in West Garfield Park can apply to be selected for the focus group. Participants will be compensated $50 for their time of 1-2 hours total. Garfield Park Neighborhood Market Saturday, October 9 & 23; 10am-2pm Visit the Garfield Park Neighborhood Market for the last dates of the season and support West Side businesses! Join us on The Hatchery plaza and shop locally grown food including produce donated by the Conservatory. During October we will be observing Breast Cancer Awareness Month at the Market in order to raise awareness for the disease and stand in solidarity with our neighbors affected by and living with breast cancer. Please consider wearing pink with us in support of this national campaign. On October 9th, we're also encouraging folks to walk, run or bike to the market in the spirit of wellness.
