Take a restorative walk through the various gardens, using your senses. Listen to wind blowing through the tree leaves, breathe in the fresh scents of lavender or bergamot, close your eyes and feel the sun on your palms, and watch water rippling across the lily pool as you notice all that moves in nature. Plant Sale! Saturday, July 9; 10am-12pm The Garfield Park Conservatory Alliance is currently raising funds to renovate the beloved, indoor Elizabeth Morse Genius Children’s Garden. As we prepare for construction to begin this summer, we’ve potted up non-collection plants to find new homes. Take a piece of the garden home with you and support the Conservatory! Entrance to the sale is at the Sensory Garden Gate (just south of the main entrance) with plants on a first come, first serve basis. Members receive a 10% discount with their member card. There is no reservation needed to access the sale. If you’d like to visit the Conservatory before or after shopping the sale, please book a reservation. Plant Sale! Family Yoga W/DuShaun! Saturday, July 30; 10:30am-11:30am Free; Donations Accepted Join yoga instructor DuShaun for a fun morning of yoga and movement in the outdoor gardens. The class will include kid-friendly poses, mindfulness, and fun! This class is best suited for kids in grade school, though younger and/or older kids are welcome and would also enjoy the class. Pre-registration is required and the class size is limited. The class costs $15 for adults and $5 for children under 18. There are 50% off discount codes available for West Side residents. Ask A Master Gardener In Person FAMILY PROGRAMS Wild Wednesdays Summer Program Starts Wednesday, July 13; 4pm-7pm Runs Through September; Free Program Join GPCA’s Nature Educators on Wednesday evenings this summer! We will get our hands dirty, play, and discover new things about plants, animals and nature. We will be outside in our Play and Grow Garden where kids can climb on our tinker tree, build a fort, dig in our pebble pool and run around. We cannot accommodate groups and kids must be accompanied by an adult (at least one adult per 5 children). Book a free reservation to the Conservatory to enjoy this drop in program. Join/Renew Agave Guiengola Time Lapse Witness a time lapse of the Agave guiengola named "Guien" blooming in the Garfield Park Conservatory Desert House. The time lapse started on January 19, 2022 and ended March 3, 2022 and was created by our Deputy Director of Conservatories. Watch the flowering process which starts at the bottom with yellow blooms that move slowly to the top of the quiote (flowering stalk). This was the first and last time in her 35-year life that Guien bloomed. It happens just before the plant slowly dies. Watch The Time Lapse COMMUNITY CORNER PlayStreets! Is Back PlayStreets! events focus on creating safe and accessible residential play areas for kids to be active, to learn, and for neighbors to come together. The Garfield Park Community Council has several PlayStreets! events planned for this summer, in locations all over Garfield Park, with partners Ridgeway Block Club, Legler Library, the Garfield Park Conservatory Alliance and more! The running group is inspiring new and advanced runners alike to go after their goals and dreams. “Free workouts and runs are energizing this underserved community hungry for activities that advocate whole body fitness and togetherness! From the Couch to 5K program to marathon hopefuls, Peace Runners 773 is tackling real community issues, such as obesity, low life expectancy and mental health in real time, getting real results,” Peace Runners 773 founder Jackie Hoffman says. On Saturdays they host free community workouts, meeting at the Gold Dome at 100 N Central Park. At 9:30am there is a Community 2 mile run and at 10am a Community Indoor Workout.
