NOVEMBER 2022 HAPPENINGS URBAN ROOTS TEENS EXPLORE THE CONSERVATORY FOR GREEN CAREER WEEK Urban Roots teens from Al Raby Highschool spent time at the Conservatory for #GreenCareerWeek through an initiative by Seed Your Future. They spent two days participating in workshops and behind the scenes tours in order to learn about the environmental careers offered at GPC, from Conservatory staff. The Adult Experiential Learning Manager led them in a natural plant dye workshop using indigo leaves from the gardens. They created their own plant dyes and created handkerchiefs. Later in the week, the Nature Education team led them in an environmental adaptations workshop, as students worked in pairs to build and simulate roofing that could collect clean drinking water when it rains. Lastly, a Class 1 Floriculturist and aquatic plant expert for the Chicago Park District provided an in depth look at a career in horticulture and water lilies. Students learned pathways into the industry, amazing water lily facts, and discussed the ecosystems that help water lilies thrive. Principal funding for Urban Roots has been provided by the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) [MA20-16-0031-16]. Additional funding provided in part by: Bank of America Foundation, Anonymous Fund of Central Indiana Community Foundation, IMC Chicago Charitable Foundation, PNC Foundation, After School Matters and an anonymous donor.
