August 2023 Connecting People To Nature On Chicago's West Side Artist's Garden: Fairy Garden Exhibit Open Now until September 17th $5 per Adult/Free for kids, GPCA Members and West Side Community Have you gone fairy spotting? 🧚✨ Experience the whimsical world of wonder and architecture of our resident fairies in this summer’s Fairy Garden exhibit! The Fairy Garden features 18 magical fairy houses set creatively within the beautiful flowers and greenery of the Artist’s Garden. Classic flowers including hollyhock, sunflower, sweet alyssum, and nasturtium are joined by enchanting varieties such as Salvia ‘Fairy Queen’, ‘Dreamland Pink’ Zinnia, and ‘Spellbound White Blush’ Petunia. The mini-homes represent a wide range of design styles and materials, limited only by the builders’ imaginations. This seasonal outdoor exhibit is open until September 17th, 2023. Admission: $5 for Adults; Free for kids, people who live in Garfield Park and GPCA members. Thank you for helping us raise $250,000 which will be matched dollar for dollar by an anonymous donor. We have successfully raised $6,965,434 towards this incredible project. Special thanks to Block Club Chicago for spreading the word about our matching grant. We are grateful for every $1 – together we can make this happen. You can read the Block Club article here. Thank you to all who have supported the EMG Children’s Garden renovation, we could not be at this stage without you. We anticipate breaking ground in Fall of 2023 and reopening the new space in Fall of 2024. Stay tuned for more updates. 💚🌱💚 Drea Slaughter Has Been Accepted As a 2024 Community Leadership Fellow We are so proud to announce that our Community Engagement Manager, Drea Slaughter, has been accepted into the Community Leadership Fellow's Class of 2024 cohort. Community Leadership Fellows (CLF) is a leadership development experience that involves; educational workshops, collaborative learning, mentoring and networking in order to empower community leaders to build movements and impact the neighborhoods in which they live, work, and lead. Drea is excited to learn and grow alongside her peers and to utilize what she learns to sustain meaningful work in the Garfield Park area and surrounding West Side community. PLANTASIA Returns to the Conservatory on Sept 3rd & 4th Join Empty Bottle Presents and Sacred Bones Records here at the Garfield Park Conservatory after-hours for a transformative experience combining sound, light, and the gardens' lush vegetation. This multi-sensory experience is inspired by Mort Garson's 1976 album Mother Earth’s Plantasia, which was intended for plants and the people who love them. The record was reissued by Sacred Bones on vinyl June 21, 2019 after it’s only pressing 43 years ago. For this special once a year Plantasia event, Empty Bottle has thoughtfully curated a two-night experience with an expansive lineup of musicians to present new music inspired by the ethos of the album. Listen to new interpretations of music for plants by a variety of experimental, classical, and indie rock musicians. Unique activations from Aeriz, FEW, Bell's Brewery, and New Belgium Brewing Company will also be present during the two-night event. A portion of ticket proceeds support GPCA nature education programs and resources. Bonsai w/ Chicago Bonsai Club Wednesday, August 16; 6pm-7:30pm Free Learn about the ancient art of growing bonsai from the Chicago Bonsai Club, a chapter of the Midwest Bonsai Society. Bring your bonsai trees to work on or just come to watch. The meeting is open to any interested adults, drop-in anytime from 6pm-7:30pm in the Classroom. Potting soil and wire will be provided, and some plant materials and pots will be available at a nominal cost. NATURE EDUCATION PROGRAMS Inspiring Children & Caretakers With The Power Of Nature URBAN ROOTS TEEN ENVIRONMENTAL JUSTICE PROGRAM The Urban Roots Teen Docents are becoming environmental stewards this summer. The teens are giving educational tours, harvesting fruits and vegetables from the Gardens, and even beekeeping! This summer, Wild Wednesdays is outside in our Play and Grow Garden, where kids can get a little wild as they climb on our tinker tree, build a fairy garden, dig (or make cupcakes) in our pebble pond and run around. We will learn about plants, make art projects, conduct experiments to better understand nature, and much more! Through the program, volunteer Community Stewards and other volunteers work collaboratively with Chicago Park District staff and contractors to protect, maintain, and restore the natural integrity of their adopted natural area.
