Open House Postponed 
---------------------


My district office open house that was scheduled for this upcoming Saturday, August 26, 2023, has been postponed. Stay tuned for the rescheduled date. I look forward to meeting with residents of the district and providing resources and opportunities that my office can provide.  


Excessive Heat Warning 
-----------------------

An Excessive Heat Warning has been issued by the National Weather Service in Chicago for Wednesday, August 23 from 11 a.m. – 9 p.m. 

 

This is in addition to the Excessive Heat Watch beginning Wednesday morning, August 23 through 8 p.m. on Thursday, August 24 due to an expected period of dangerous heat and humidity with possible heat index values of 110˚-115° degrees for at least two consecutive days. 

 

Excessive heat or extreme conditions can lead to unhealthy impacts especially over a duration of time.  Fifth District residents are also reminded that hot temperatures and high humidity may cause heat illnesses to occur. Below are resources available to help alleviate the effects so you can stay healthy and safe.  

 

                                         City of Chicago Cooling Centers

The City of Chicago’s cooling areas located at the City's six community service centers are activated from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday – Friday. NOTE: Hours will be expanded on Wednesday, August 23 and Thursday, August 24 from 8:30 a.m. to 7 p.m.

 

Englewood Center – 1140 W. 79th Street  
King Center – 4314 S. Cottage Grove  
South Chicago Center – 8650 S. Commercial Ave.  

 

 

Additional locations are activated from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday, August 23 and Thursday, August 24:

Heat Warning Action Plan

CPS is recommending that students stay hydrated and bring full water bottles to school. They will provide students opportunities to refill water will be provided throughout the day.

 

CPS is working to ensure that staff and students remain sufficiently hydrated, all water fountains are in working order. In addition, CPS will be working to keep classrooms cool and will be holding recess and physical education classes indoors.

 

                                          Guidance for Athletics

Due to the forecasted extreme heat for Wednesday and Thursday, all outdoor athletics games are postponed, and all practices will either be canceled or moved indoors for those two days. Regular programming may resume Friday, August 25, pending any updates.

 

Should any tickets have been purchased via HomeTown ticketing to any events on those days, per CPS Policy there is no refund, however that ticket can be used for whenever the game / event is rescheduled.
