Hi JW,
Thanks for the invite and everyone was asking for an introduction so I'll
provide a brief summary of why I wanted to attend the community garden
meeting.
My name is Neline and moved back to Chicago at the end of 2019 but then
Covid arrived and there were stay at home orders so most of my activities
have been webinars and online.
I did grow up in Chicago but left in 2006 and most of my adult life was in
NYC and there were a lot of activities for me to join (mostly volunteer
work).
I am familiar with some gardening activities but also because the
restaurant scene is huge in NYC especially the farm to table component so
that's why I was asking about rooftop greenhouses since one restaurant was
growing their own vegetables to serve for their courses that day.
There's also a lot of farmers markets strategically located next to the
area of the subway like 14th street and the Park Slope Co-Op which I used
to go at the early years but due to location I just went to 14th Street or
if there was a Farmer's Market pop up that was interesting (I think that
was a hybrid at the old Fulton fish market place).
My old neighborhood Astoria had quite a few flower shops (at least 3 on my
way home so it was nice to stop by and check out what they in inventory).
One of them told me they had a greenhouse in NJ.
There's also the flower district in Manhattan (well I call it the flower
district since they had quite a few designers all lined up on that
street). So, I was frequently exposed to this on my daily walks to commute
to work but never really thought about it. I did have this class component
in college about biodiversity and I briefly learned about the varieties of
tomatoes we have but most people wouldn't be able to identify them.
So, that's why I am interested in the community garden, rooftop
greenhouses, etc.
