CAUTION: External Email

So we’re experiencing the wildfire stuff, and wondering what effect the smoke will have on our gardens. Although this is new to us, we know other folks have dealt with it, and will deal with it again. Any particular advice on what we should be doing once the air clears?

You’ve done a great job with this Don. I too have no comments. We might have to get this from you to use over here if that’s ok?

Thanks very much, Linda! You guys in Denver are nuggets of community garden gold (which reminds me - congrats on the game...)

I also want to thank you again, Linda, for setting up the CG leadership forum. I highly recommend it to all on this email thread.

(Also good to know about that red pen. Good sharp-eyed editing is indispensable for decent writing, I think. Kate Hamilton, in Toronto, is also a pro in that department, who helped enormously with the last issue of Community Gardening.)

Great article, Don!

Shockingly, I have no comments (my team knows I love the red pen…). Like the community space, green space and inviting the community in. A few things we are working on here in Denver.

Happy spring, everyone. 🌷

What the heck, I finished a draft. So, check it out, if you want.

10 steps to sustaining a community garden DRAFT<https://protect2.fireeye.com/v1/url?k=31323334-50bba2bf-31321b84-4544474f5631-38b7fb7b36ab13ee&q=1&e=9aee5370-0c38-4eb6-91e2-84847f7c4def&u=https%3A%2F%2Fdocs.google.com%2Fdocument%2Fd%2F1B48UDJuoqwvWiM2yYNcpI-JTgWn4LtjpBfHjXV580eI%2Fedit%3Fusp%3Dsharing>

It's very raw, just off the top, so feel free to make any suggestions you want. Maybe some of my suggestions stink. It needs to be much shorter. The order can change, and more important stuff (I said nothing about grant writing...) may need to bump my touchie-feelie draft suggestions.

Anyway, I'd be grateful for any suggestions.

I'm hoping to have this edition of Community Gardening out by early June. So, it's quick turnaround. Sorry about that!

And of course it's spring. Nobody who works with gardening has any time in the spring, who am I kidding? I know that!

Don

PS: If Google Docs won't let you in, it should prompt you to tell me to give you access. I will, though it may take me a few hours before. I'm outside a lot (see above.) Beautiful weather here this week, not too hot yet. Sugar snap peas, in abundance.

Hello,

If you don't mind me calling this a convening of a Council of Wisdom, but I have a question or two, and a connection you might be interested in.

My questions are this:

First, the upcoming edition of ACGA's Community Gardening will feature an article about ACGA's famous "10 steps to starting a community garden." (Community Gardening is now the name of ACGA's magazine, formerly The Community Greening Review, and before that (with Sally McCabe as editor for much of its existence) The Journal of Community Gardening.)

The steps are here, thanks to Dr. Lucy Bradley, now at NC State CES:

https://forsyth.ces.ncsu.edu/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/10-Steps-to-Starting-a-Community-Garden.pdf?fwd=no

Rather than rehash them, the original 10 are still pretty darn good (see question 2), so the story will propose 10 steps to SUSTAINING a community garden. Two questions about that:

Any key things jump into your mind about how to do that?

And would you mind looking over the draft a little later this week? It won't be super-long, maybe 600-800 words. That way, you can add (and you'll be credited!) your thoughts and suggestions.

Thanks in advance.

Second question: Does anyone know where our original 10 steps originated? Was there a principle writer, or did ACGA's board come up with it, or a little of both?

Now, finally, for those of you interested, Linda Appel Lipsius, ED of DUG, has created a national leadership forum to discuss community gardening and related issues, using technological tools that weren't around when those first 10 steps were created. If you are interested and have time, please contact Linda, who is on this email. The meetings I've attended are truly inspiring. ACGA's current board members are taking part, so you can "meet" some of them there, too.

Best, and thanks (and I'm impressed with all you guys have accomplished, on behalf of community gardens, and simply in your lives. You are amazing and inspiring, all of you!)
