MARCH 2023 Connecting People To Nature On Chicago's West Side SPRING FLOWER SHOW: BEE'S KNEES February 15 - May 14 Free; donations accepted | Reservations required Bees play a key role in sustaining plant communities and ensuring the creation of seeds and fruits in many flowering plants. Their advanced set of senses help with pollination and communication. Did you know that a honeybee's sense of smell is 100 times more sensitive than humans! It is so sensitive it can detect the trace of a scent while flying. Instead of a nose like humans, they have antennae with over 170 receptors. Their antennae help them find pollen rich flowers full of delicious nectar. Come learn more about the world of bees and blooms in the Spring Flower Show: Bee's Knees. Open now through May 14th. We use a timed-entry reservation system as a way to better spread visitation throughout the day to reduce traffic congestion and visitor crowding, making everyone’s experience more enjoyable. Reservations are free, donations are welcome. A reservation to visit the Conservatory includes access to indoor and outdoor gardens, including our Spring Flower Show: Bee’s Knees. (Please note, the EMG Children's Garden remains closed for renovations). Reservations can be made online up to 30 days in advance. In February, teens led Black History tours for visitors. Many of the plants growing in the Conservatory have deep significance to Black history, and the ways we think about horticulture has been shaped by so many Black scientists, artists, and thinkers. Teens wove together stories and info on botany, ecology, horticulture and Black culture and history to honor the plants, people and their legacies. Recently, Planet Forward highlighted the incredible Urban Roots Teen Environmental Justice Program at the Conservatory. Read the full article here. Principal funding for Urban Roots has been provided by the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) [MA20-16-0031-16]. Additional funding provided in part by: Bank of America Foundation, Anonymous Fund of Central Indiana Community Foundation, IMC Chicago Charitable Foundation, Peoples Gas Community Fund, PNC, After School Matters and an anonymous donor.
