TRAININGS AND WORKSHOPS
Sunday, April 2nd - Biochar Workshop (https://socialecologies.us9.list-manage.com/track/click?u=949625f8e7341ba1ba98ebe7c&id=4bbd37b42e&e=4e15540e89)  at Pachamanka (Freeport, IL)

In this day-long, hands-on workshop (https://socialecologies.us9.list-manage.com/track/click?u=949625f8e7341ba1ba98ebe7c&id=18899ca648&e=4e15540e89) , we will prepare local waste materials and use an open steel kiln to burn and produce char. We will process char and turn it into biochar using various methods of biological inoculation. Together we will learn and discuss the fundamental concepts behind the uses and applications of biochar for a variety of contexts such as the greenhouse, open outdoor beds, ecological restoration, and bioremediation. Some folks have expressed interest in carpooling so please reach out to info at socialecologies.net if you are interested too.

CHOP WOOD CARRY WATER RESIDENCY
Applications for the year's residencies at Pachamanka in Freeport, IL are open! In addition to welcoming creators and makers of all backgrounds, we happy to announce that we have three new categories of residency with reduced rates for makers who live within 50 miles of Freeport; for makers 60+ years old; and for makers who identify as BIPOC. We're excited to be a part of the public programs they'll be a part of while here. We will return to Red Hook, Brooklyn in early April to complete our last collection of soils and interviews to produce the second volume of our Ground Truthing publication based on our study of nearly 200 years of urban fill soils in Red Hook, Brooklyn. Social Ecologies’ Ground Truthings are in-depth studies that interweave soil fieldwork with social history. We were happy to host our first virtual introductory class to The Soil Keepers (https://socialecologies.us9.list-manage.com/track/click?u=949625f8e7341ba1ba98ebe7c&id=14abb692a2&e=4e15540e89) at the end of February and excited to be working with great students in our Body of Soil class currently. We'll be offering more in-person trainings - an introduction to community soil science and an in-depth class on the biology of soil - in the Fall.
