EXHIBIT: An Otherworldly Existence: Afrofuturism & the Environment On display now through June 30 Immerse yourself in An Otherwordly Existence: Afrofuturism & The Environment. Afrofuturism is a social, political, and artistic movement. It envisions an improved future world for African-descended peoples. The African-descended people and cultures play a key role in the creation of that world. An Otherworldly Existence is an exhibit that uses an Afrofuturist framework to showcase the power of representation and creation in environmentalist efforts. It illuminates the importance of listening to Black & Indigenous communities in the fight to create a more sustainable reality on this planet. South Side native, artist Kee Merriweather, made this body of work. Garfield Park residents also shaped the exhibit.  Click here to see a recent feature in the Austin Weekly News! Annual Seedling Sale on May 13! Our Annual Seedling Sale returns in-person and by appointment only this year on Saturday, May 13 from 10:30am-2pm.  Shop for heirloom flowers, fruit, herbs and vegetable seedlings grown by GPCA volunteers and staff. Our seedlings are grown in our signature, hand-mixed growing medium using organic methods and without synthetic pesticides. Click here for a list of currently available seedlings. We no longer host the large public event as we have in the past. It's a free event with pre-registration for neighbors (West Side residents in Garfield Park, Austin, West Humboldt and North Lawndale neighborhoods) and GPCA members. It will be scheduled for a Wednesday evening and we typically know a week in advance of the set giveaway date. GPCA members and neighbors will be alerted when the registration is open. Stay tuned! At GPC Through May 28 Thursday-Sunday: 10am-2pm In Horticulture Hall Visit Monday Coffee Co., the Black-owned coffee pop-up founded by Amanda Christine Harth and Felton Kizer, at Garfield Park Conservatory through May 28. Make a free reservation to the Conservatory to visit the gardens and get your coffee on! This will be the last month of their pop-up residency before taking a hiatus this summer. Learn about the plants, history, and behind-the-scenes work that goes into creating the Spring Flower Show. Tour also includes a brief walk through our Palm House. Learn more at ComEd.com/SwitchOnSummer Lecture: "Using Found Objects to Design Accessible Garden Spaces" Wednesday, May 17; 6-7pm Free with registration, donations welcome During this in-person lecture, Catherine Boldt will speak about utilizing found objects to design more accessible garden spaces. Catherine specializes in empowering people to use their creativity to enhance their lifestyle – living with or without a disability. Catherine’s innovative approach to gardening and design will make you look at your neighbors’ garbage piles in a whole new way. She uses an array of commonly discarded items such as stock tanks, wash tubs, and castoff furniture, organize and enhance her garden. If you have a disabled body, an aging body, or any body, come and learn how to artistically increase sustainability while making your garden easier to care for. Ask A Master Gardener Bonsai w/ Chicago Bonsai Club Wednesday, May 17; 6-7:30pm Free Learn about the ancient art of growing bonsai from the Chicago Bonsai Club, a chapter of the Midwest Bonsai Society. Bring your bonsai trees to work on or just come to watch. The meeting is open to any interested adults, drop-in anytime from 6pm-7:30pm in the Classroom. Potting soil and wire will be provided, and some plant materials and pots will be available at a nominal cost. Origami Open House Saturday, May 13; 12pm-3pm Free On the 2nd Saturday of the month the Chicago Area Origami Society presents a free drop-in Origami Open House to our visitors. Adults and kids accompanied by an adult are welcome. Free and open to the public. Registration is not required. If you’d like to visit the Conservatory before or after joining this program, please book a reservation.   NATURE EDUCATION PROGRAMS Inspiring Children & Caretakers With The Power Of Nature URBAN ROOTS TEEN ENVIRONMENTAL JUSTICE PROGRAM Spring field trip time! The Urban Roots Teen Environmental Justice cohort had some fun in the sun at Starved Rock the other week. The teens also went to Altitude for team building at a trampoline park last month and will head over to Morton Arboretum later this summer.   A primary focus of the Conservatory and the Urban Roots program is to provide equitable access to nature, connecting local youth who have been under-represented and excluded in the outdoor movement with culturally relevant and inclusive nature programs and experiences that support their well-being and development, and in turn, cultivate a new generation of conservationists to advocate for the health of the planet.
