April 2024 Connecting People To Nature On Chicago's West Side   CURRENT EXHIBITS Spring Flower Show: What's in a Name? Open through Sunday, May 12, 2024 Reservations needed | Free; donations welcome There are so many different types, sizes, colors, and fragrances in the “What’s in a Name?” Spring Flower Show! And even amongst the same species of flowers, there are different stages of development. Look at these two stages of a hybridized Persian Buttercup (Ranunculus asiaticus ‘Pink Shades’). Come experience the Spring Flower Show "What's in a Name?" to get a dose of spring and leave with more knowledge about how to identify plants with some history and science of botanical nomenclature. Huge thanks to all who came out for the community opening reception of “Meeting History" on Sunday, March 10th. This collaborative project by CatchLight Local Fellow, Samantha Friend Cabrera, Gina Jamison, Shacaara Westbrooks, Levette Haynes, Anette Britton, Pastor Marshall Hatch Sr, and Marshall Hatch jr. visualizes a history of Garfield Park that centers Black joy, ownership, legacy and history through the sourcing of photographs and stories. Pictured here is Gina Jamison (GPAC President) with her immediate family who have lived in Garfield Park for 4 generations! This exhibit is on display now through June 21 in the Community Room. The exhibit schedule varies week to week depending on all the exciting things we have happening at the Conservatory. Celebrate Earth Day with us and GPCA Nature Educators and Urban Roots Environmental Justice Teens on Saturday, April 20 from 11am-2pm with indoor and outdoor activities that showcase how we can be more self-aware, creative and sustainable. Activities will include: Pop-up Plant Sale Plant Bingo in the Palm House Kaben Kafo djembe ensemble in Horticulture Hall Found Objects Sun Prints in the Artist's Garden Learn about herbal remedies, tinctures and recipes promoting healthy living with Urban Roots Environmental Justice teens Plant Propagation demo and seed kits with Urban Roots teens and Shayna, GPCA Greenhouse & Garden Education Manager Photo booth and more! We welcome donations from those who are able and want to give. Suggested donation $10/adult, $5/child. Earth Day Family Tree ID Walk Saturday, 4/20; 11:30am-12:30pm Free; advanced registration and GPC reservation needed Join GPCA Nature Education staff for an Earth Day walk around the outdoor gardens to beautiful and historic trees of Chicago and Garfield Park. Participants will meet in the Desert House near the Blue Stone Terrace doors. Register for this event here. Art After Dark on 4/3, Morning Glories on 4/5, Budding Botanists on 4/6 & 4/7 What happens to your leftover food? It goes in the trash...and then what? There's another place for it to go that's better for the planet - compost it! Composting is like recycling your leftovers. A unique kind of composting involves some hard working and wiggly recyclers...what do you think they could be? Come learn more! Re-invention Ideas Workshop Art After Dark on 4/10, Morning Glories on 4/12, Budding Botanists on 4/13 & 4/14 Reduce, reuse, recycle is in that order for a reason. If you can re-use something instead of recycling, that's usually a better option in most scenarios. Join us for some activities and crafts where we will reuse, recycle and reimagine together. Seed Paper Art After Dark on 4/17, Morning Glories on 4/19, Budding Botanists on 4/21 Visitors and families will take part in the paper making process with family programs staff, with an extra twist- adding native wildflower seeds! Pieces of seed paper will be available to take home the next weekend.  Pollinator Party Art After Dark on 4/24, Morning Glories on 4/26, Budding Botanists on 4/27 & 4/28 Let's discuss pollination and the importance of pollinators in healthy ecosystems. Ecuador is one of the most biodiverse places on the planet, yet its wild spaces are also among the most threatened. GPCA hosts an annual Bee Forum to join local beekeepers and beekeeping experts to discuss relevant topics in the world of beekeeping, in addition to building community with Chicagoland beekeepers. GPCA is excited to have Randy Oliver back to discuss why bees do what they do. If you're a beekeeper then you know how incredible beekeeping can be, but you also know how incredibly frustrating keeping bees can be. Randy's goal during the presentation will be to help beekeepers understand why bees behave the way they do and apply that to their daily beekeeping. Scholarships are available!
