August 16 at 11:30 a.m.   Join the MWRD for the Reopening of the Nicholas J. Melas Centennial Fountain on August 16, 2024, at 11:30 a.m. The Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago (MWRD) will mark the completion of the reconstructed Nicholas J. Melas Centennial Fountain, 400 N. McClurg Court, Chicago, with a celebration on Friday, August 16, at 11:30 a.m. Originally built in honor of the MWRD's 100-year anniversary in 1989, the fountain represents a century of progress and commitment from the MWRD to improve the quality of the Chicago River to protect public health, enhance waterway ecology, and stimulate economic development. The fountain, which features a modernist sundial, is named in honor of long-serving Commissioner and President of the MWRD Board, Nicholas J. Melas. Each hour from 10 a.m. until 11 p.m. during the summer months, the fountain will send an 80-foot water arc across the river. Note: There is no parking at the event site.
