August Updates from the 5th District
====================================

Happy Back to School 5th District Families! It was a pleasure to meet many of you at the various Back to School Fairs and Events I attended over the past week. I hope many of you were able to get any necessary supplies and get ready for the start of another busy school year! There are a few more upcoming Back to School events highlighted in the newsletter this week.

As we focus on our kids and the new school year, I am proud to have sponsored a new law which ensures children under the care of the Department of Children and Family Services have a hair care plan which accurately reflects their cultural background. It is important that we all work to make the kids in our community feel safe and welcome. I hope this fall we can all strive to collaborate, respect one another, and get involved in our neighborhoods!

Best,

Kimberly Neely DuBuclet
State Representative
5th District

Have A Story about Unfair and Excessive Car Insurance Rates? Share with the Illinois Coalition for Fair Car Insurance Rates!

Have your car insurance premiums gone way up? Even if you've been a safe driver? The Illinois Legislature is considering legislation to act on unchecked car insurance rate increases and other unfair industry practices. **We need to **[**hear**](https://aa1n4.r.ag.d.sendibm3.com/mk/cl/f/sh/SMK1E8tHeGLdaZ8VRdEV73SpF2BB/mJaoq2eyVPBh)** how these issues are impacting real people like you.**

The Illinois Coalition for Fair Car Insurance Rates is [**collecting stories**](https://aa1n4.r.ag.d.sendibm3.com/mk/cl/f/sh/SMK1E8tHeGSV2hxScnNzCslZDKlR/wyp1fXzeWAnO) to share them with legislators, reporters and other leaders who can ensure people like you are protected from unfair discrimination and excessive car insurance rates. If you own a car in Illinois, the state requires you to buy car insurance but does not protect you from excessive or unfair rates. In fact, Illinois is one of only two states whose Department of Insurance has no power to reject or modify excessive car insurance rates. Illinois also allows insurance companies to unfairly base rates on who you are, using factors like credit scores, education levels, jobs and zip codes, rather than how safe a driver you are. It can lead to absurd results: safe Illinois drivers with clean driving records and poor credit pay hundreds of dollars more for insurance on average than drivers with a drunk driving conviction and excellent credit.

**If you have a story about these unfair and excessive car insurance rates, **[**please fill out this form**](https://aa1n4.r.ag.d.sendibm3.com/mk/cl/f/sh/SMK1E8tHeGZMUqmPnxXTIi4JBdLh/jHldce8WKWgY)**. **
