Next Door Dinners is a community dinner project with a pay-what-you-can
model! We serve a three-course dinner that sells out around 50 people. The
dinners source from Chicago urban farmers, retailers, and makers and pops
up at venues all around the city. All profits go to various organizations
supporting Chicago residents
*What is pay-what-you-can? *
The price for a ticket to “break-even” for dinner and venue costs is about
$15 a person. All profits beyond that point are donated.
Last month, some gave $5 and some gave $75. When buying your ticket, please
consider your socioeconomic status, inherent wealth, and access to fresh
food, and give whatever you are comfortable with.
Where does the money go?
This month we will be donating profits to El Arbol. El Arbol started as a
collective of community members working to support recently arrived
migrants staying at the police station in Logan Square. We are now in the
process of opening a free store in our neighborhood that will allow our new
neighbors and other folks in the community to receive things like clothes,
household goods, and much more. With thousands of new arrivals
transitioning to shelters and permanent housing, our goal is to create a
space where we can take in donations and distribute them to anyone in need
as directly and efficiently as possible.
The donations from this dinner will help fill holes in our inventory for
essential items for families, help acquire materials for the operation of
the store such as shelving and hardware, and promote other programs such as
meals and community programming for store visitors.
