January 2024 Connecting People To Nature On Chicago's West Side The Winter Flower Show: Celebrating Silver Closes on January 7th! The Garfield Park Conservatory's acclaimed Winter Flower Show 'Celebrating Silver' closes on Sunday, January 7th! Celebrating Silver puts the spotlight on Garfield Park Conservatory Alliance’s 25th anniversary. Formed by Garfield Park community members in 1998, the Alliance is a non-profit organization that connects people to nature through a broad range of public programming, school partnerships, fundraising initiatives, and more! Learn about the rich 25 years of history while enjoying beautiful silver foliage, lush poinsettias in pink and white hues, and more of our favorite winter flowers and plants. Entry is included with your reservation. For Garfield Park and West Side residents interested in special community focused programs or early invites, please fill out this interest form or contact Drea Slaughter. Starting on Wednesday, January 17th Momentum Coffee will be serving a delicious menu of espresso drinks, pastries and much more in the Conservatory’s Horticulture Hall. Founded by the dynamic duo Nikki Bravo and Tracy Powell, Momentum Coffee's journey began in May 2020 in the heart of Chicago. Their shared passion for coffee and community ignited the idea of creating a space where people could connect over exceptional brews. We hope you will visit soon to enjoy a warm beverage or cold brew and support this inspirational West Side Black- and family-owned business. The Momentum Coffee Pop Up will be open Wednesday – Sunday from 10am – 3pm. Reservations to visit the Conservatory are needed to access the coffee cart. GPCA members will receive 10% off all purchases. Learn More about Momentum Coffee Urban Roots Winter Showcase The theme of the Urban Roots 2023 Winter Showcase is Herbalism! The Urban Roots hosted an 'Educational Marketplace' last month where visitors learned about the beneficial properties of several herbs, and were shown best practices for use. In addition, visitors had an opportunity to enjoy herbal drinks and the teens shared a salve and toothpaste from recipes learned throughout the program. Learn More Principal funding for Urban Roots has been provided by the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) [MA20-16-0031-16]. YOUTH NATURE EDUCATION PROGRAMS Winter Wonderland Nature Play Days Saturday, January 27; 11am-2pm Free with visit Enjoy the beauty of winter outside with Garfield Park Conservatory’s Nature Educators! During the winter months, we will be outside in the Play & Grow Garden to experience a lot of fun outside, even when it’s cold. More dates later this Winter! Activities will include: Fort Building Fairy Furniture Whammy Doodles Smores And More! Art After Dark Wednesdays; 4-7:30pm Free with visit Art After Dark is a free, drop in program designed for kids and families ages 4 and up. Activities follow themes of nature and science, but with a special focus on learning, processing, and making personal connections to subject matter through art. Children can enjoy open-ended collaborative or individual projects, nature journal prompts inspired by the Conservatory collection and conversations about Chicago’s ecosystems and our place in them, in a calm and inviting atmosphere! Morning Glories Fridays; 10am-12pm Free with visit Morning Glories is a free, drop-in program designed for kids ages 0-3 and their caregivers! The lessons follow themes of science and nature with modifications to focus on motor skill development, sensory exploration, and social interactions between families. Activities include story times, a sensory bin, lots of blankets for crawlers and tummy-timers, and a friendly atmosphere! Budding Botanists Saturdays and Sundays; 10:30am-2:30pm Free with visit Budding Botanists learning stations are for all ages! This month, the Budding Botanists will be learning all about light! We explore holidays and their use light, candle making, differences in vision in living things and a fan favorite Plantoscopes!! This drop in program is included in a reservation to the Conservatory. Budding Botanists will continue to be indoors. Drop-in family programs are supported in part by PNC and the People's Gas Community Fund. EVENTS & PROGRAMS Autogenerated Closed Captioning Is Available At Our Virtual Programs 2024 Music Under Glass Performances Open Call Calling all Chicago-based musicians! The Garfield Park Conservatory Alliance is seeking performers for our Summer 2024 Music Under Glass series! Music Under Glass is a live music performance series featuring a diverse range of musicians, vocalists and performers. All performances are open to the general public. We welcome artists from all genres. Applications accepted on a rolling basis until January 31st, with priority to those received before January 15th. Learn More Virtual Beginning Beekeeping Two-Part Class Mondays, January 8 & 15; 6pm-8:30pm Cost: $40 Members; $50 General Registration Spend two days virtually connecting with our Head Beekeeper, Marcin Matelski, to learn the basics of beekeeping. This lecture-based class has been adapted for a virtual experience and is limited in capacity to encourage questions and group interaction. This comprehensive class is a prerequisite for joining the GPCA volunteer beekeeper program. Pre-registration is required. If you can't make the class this month, we're offering another virtual option in February! Register Virtual Yoga Saturdays, January 13 & 27; 9am-10am Free, donations welcome Join Natalie or DuShaun for a one-hour session from the comforts of your own home with the Conservatory as the background. Beginners to advanced yogis are welcome to join. 1/13 Virtual Yoga w/ Natalie 1/27 Virtual Yoga w/ DuShaun In-Person Yoga w/ Natalie Wednesday, January 17; 6pm-7pm Cost: $5 Join Natalie for a special one-hour session in Horticulture Hall. Registration closes at 9:00am on Wednesday, January 17th. This is offering is separate from our bi-weekly virtual classes and will not be available for virtual participation. 1/17 In-Person w/ Natalie Plan A Small Space Veggie Garden Saturday, January 27; 10:30am Cost: $32 Members/Volunteers; $40 General Registration Join us for an in-person, interactive workshop for beginning gardeners to learn how to plan a vegetable garden for small spaces. The program is sold-out. Scholarship applications are still open, apply by January 12th. Ask A Master Gardener Origami Open House Saturday, January 13; 12pm - 3pm Free On the 2nd Saturday of the month the Chicago Area Origami Society presents a free drop-in Origami Open House to our visitors. Adults and kids accompanied by an adult are welcome. Free and open to the public. Registration is not required. If you’d like to visit the Conservatory before or after joining this program, please book a reservation. Carroll Ave Breakthrough Urban Ministries will be hosting an Adult Yoga session every 1st and 3rd Friday, along with a GetFit HIIT Circuit Training every 2nd and 4th Friday. Youth Yoga will be Fridays 5-6pm. Contact Camille Joy Powell for more information. Cooking Classes for Kids January 20 - March 9 5100 W Harrison St Kitchen Possible is partnering with BUILD to provide cooking classes for kids, ages 8-12. Kids will gain basic cooking skills and a mix of delicious (and wholesome) recipes. Every Saturday from January 20-March 9, from 11am to 12:30pm. Space is limited, register by January 10. RSVP Lifeguard Explorers Training Program The Chicago Park District is looking to train life guards. A new session for Chicago residents, ages 15-22, starts the week of January 8. The class is 15 sessions, twice a week at Austin Town Hall Park, Nash Park, Homan Square, and La Follettee Park. Training is paid and participants receive a $475 stipend upon completion of the program.
