June 2024 Connecting People To Nature On Chicago's West Side EXHIBITS Meeting History: Closing Reception Wednesday, June 12, 2024 Reservations needed | Free, donations welcome. Discover the art of storytelling at our closing reception exhibit: "How do I tell my story? An intergenerational visual storytelling workshop awaits you on Wednesday, June 12th, from 6:00 pm to 7:30 pm. Led by the talented trio of Gina Jamison, Annette Britton, and Levette Haynes, this workshop promises to unravel the magic of personal and community storytelling. Join us for an evening of self-discovery and learn the importance of cherishing your own narrative. This workshop is an extension of the public exhibit "Meeting History: A Garfield Park Citizen Archive," currently gracing the walls of Garfield Park Conservatory until June 21st. "Meeting History" is a collaborative masterpiece brought to life by the CatchLight Local Visual Desk, ProPublica, and the Institute for Nonprofit News, generously supported by the Kresge Foundation, McCormick Foundation, and PhotoWings. Special thanks to the remarkable community members who contributed to this exhibition, including Annette Britton, Rev. Dr. Marshall Elijah Hatch Sr. and Marshall Hatch Jr., Levette Haynes, Gina Jamison, LaShone Kelly, and Shacarra Westbrooks. See you there Make A Free Reservation  The Creative Mind Of George Washington Carver Artist's Garden Show Opens Wednesday, July 3, through September 22nd   Since new developments are the products of a creative mind, we must therefore stimulate and encourage that type of mind in every way possible.”  George Washington Carver    Most know George Washington Carver for his contributions to agricultural science through the development of hundreds of peanut products. However, he was also a gifted artist whose biggest inspiration was nature. It was Carver's creative lens that motivated him in all of his greatest scientific achievements. The Creative Mind of George Washington Carver Artist’s Garden Show will provide visitors insight into Carver’s artistic and scientific development and the gifts he shared with the world.    Carver understood that our emotional peace is interdependent on our surroundings, and he believed that everyone deserved to be surrounded by beauty. George Washington Carver teaches about the endless inspiration available in nature and the power of allowing that creativity to blossom. Visitors will find inspiration in the Artist’s Garden this summer by enjoying the beautiful floral landscape inspired by Carver’s paint washes & botanical illustrations. Through interpretive panels, visitors will learn more about the Carver’s fascination with the botanical and how it infused his work.    The Creative Mind of George Washington Carver Artist’s Garden Show opens July 3, 2024, in the Artist’s Garden. It can and can be enjoyed through September 22, 2024. Youth Advisory Council Presentations at Juneteenth Picnic Wednesday, June 12, 4pm- 7pm Join our teen leaders as they interpret our teen values of curiosity, belonging, learning, activism and interdependence into STEAM projects that will benefit our community.  This program is included in all reservations to visit the Conservatory, book your reservation ahead of time here.  Juneteenth Picnic Wednesday, June 12, 4pm- 7pm  You're Invited to Our Juneteenth Picnic Celebration! Join us on Wednesday, June 12th, from 4pm to 7pm, for a community gathering honoring African American culture and commemorating the historical significance of Juneteenth! We will celebrate the rich heritage of Juneteenth through music, art, and engaging activities during our free picnic event. Registered attendees will receive wristbands for complimentary food and drinks, so be sure to secure your spot! Bring your own blanket or simply relax on the grass in our beautiful outdoor City Garden. In case of inclement weather, we'll move the festivities indoors to ensure the celebration goes on! Urban Roots Teen Environmental Justice Program is a paid, seasonal employment opportunity designed to develop high school students into guides for the Garfield Park Conservatory and environmental agents of change. The program helps develop teens into civic leaders and better versions of themselves through identity development and several life skill enrichment activities. As an Urban Roots docent and environmental activist, candidates will be introduced to fundamental plant science, conservation education, financial literacy, urban gardening, environmental justice and green space workforce exposure. As the Chicago 13.1 race weekend unfolds on June 8th and 9th, we're gearing up for some exhilarating events right here on the West Side. On Sunday, June 9th, the Bank of America Half Marathon will set the streets abuzz with energy. Please be aware of street closures and parking restrictions: Vehicles parked along the Chicago 13.1 course route will be towed starting at 1:00 am on Sunday, June 9th. Streets along the course route will close at 6:30 am, with Central Park Ave. reopening around 10:30/10:45 am on the same day.  Note: The Garfield Park Conservatory will open to visitors at 11 am on Sunday, June 9th. But the excitement doesn't stop there! Join us on Saturday, June 8th, near the Bandshell in Garfield Park for the Westside Wellness Events Enjoy a Wellness Walk, youth running events, and a community pop-up featuring West Side businesses – all for free and open to everyone! Garfield Park Community Council Neighborhood Farmers Market Saturday, June 8, and 22nd The Garfield Park Neighborhood Market is back outside this Saturday, June 8 and we'll be celebrating Juneteenth all month long! Spend $5 at the produce table and you'll receive a commemorative Juneteenth tote bag.  This weekend, our Garden Network vendors will have a bountiful harvest of spring greens and strawberries.
