May 2024 Connecting People To Nature On Chicago's West Side CURRENT EXHIBITS Spring Flower Show: What's in a Name? Open through Sunday, May 12, 2024 Reservations needed | Free, donations welcome. Spring has sprung at Garfield Park Conservatory, and our Spring Flower Show Exhibit is in full bloom! Don't miss your chance to immerse yourself in the vibrant colors and fragrant scents of the season. But hurry – our exhibit ends on May 12th! Join us as we celebrate the beauty of spring with a stunning display of flowers, plants, and greenery.as we learn about communicating history, culture and identity through botanical nomenclature. From tulips to daffodils, and hyacinths to azaleas, our exhibit showcases the rich diversity of flora that blooms during this magical time of year. We invite the Garfield Park community, our valued members, and all visitors to experience the wonder of our Spring Flower Show before it's too late. Make A Free Reservation Meeting History: A Garfield Park Citizen Archive Open through Friday, June 21, 2024 The exhibit “Meeting History: A Garfield Park Citizen Archive” is on display at the Garfield Park Conservatory in Chicago from February 16 to June 21, in the Community Room. This project visualizes the history of Garfield Park through a citizen archive built in collaboration with local residents. The resulting archive invites you to learn more about the Garfield Park neighborhood through the photographs and stories of those who spent their time there. This project is a collaboration between the Catchlight Local Visual Desk, led by Catchlight Local Fellow Samantha Friend Cabrera, in collaboration with Catchlight, ProPublica, and the Institute for Nonprofit News, and made possible with generous support from the Kresge Foundation, McCormick Foundation and Photo Wings. The exhibit schedule varies week to week depending on all the exciting things we have happening at the Conservatory. This program is included in all reservations to visit the Conservatory, book your reservation ahead of time here. Annual Seedling Sale Saturday, May 11, 10am- 1pm Stock up at our Annual Seedling Sale to kickstart your garden for the growing season! All seedlings are lovingly grown by GPCA volunteers and Urban Roots Teen Docents, without the use of pesticides. This year, we're offering a diverse selection of warm-season veggies like tomatoes and okra, aromatic herbs including basil and dill, and pollinator-friendly flowers such as calendula and cosmos. Plus, discover a variety of heirloom treasures and resilient hybrids to suit your gardening needs. Exclusive access for West Side Community Members, GPCA Volunteers, and GPCA Members. Reservation THE PROGPAGATION HANDBOOK SIGNING WITH HILTON CARTER May 30th, 6pm - 8pm, Showhouse. Join us for a special afternoon with plant and interior stylist, best-selling author, and artist Hilton Carter as he shares his expertise on plant propagation and signs copies of his just-released book The Propagation Handbook: A Guide to Propagating Houseplants. Carter delves into best propagation methods, necessary tools, and different considerations by type of plant. Follow along as he demonstrates his own plant propagation methods and then learn expert tips and tricks as he opens the floor for your questions. Following his talk and demonstration, Carter will sign copies of The Propagation Handbook: A Guide to Propagating Houseplants. The book will be available for purchase prior to and during this event. Ask A Master Gardener Register Spring Tree ID Walk Saturday, May 25, 6pm - 8pm Free Join us in person for a walk around the Conservatory grounds to learn about trees! This in-person Tree ID Walk will be hosted in both English and Spanish. We will explore the trees of beautiful and historic Garfield Park. Interested children are welcome but must be accompanied by an adult. The walk will take place outdoors, rain or shine. Register soon to reserve a spot! Pre-registration is required. The program is free however donations are welcome. Registration closes on Friday, May 25th at 11:00am Central Time. Wild Wednesdays are back for the season at Garfield Park Conservatory!
