We have been getting ready for our September Soiree on Saturday, September

We are so excited to have Vivian Garcia as our musical guest! Vivian is a
Chicago based singer-songwriter. Her musical journey has taken her from
studying rumba flamenca rhythms in Granada, Spain to jamming with
international folk musicians in Madrid as well as singing with various
bands in Chicago.

Family Garden Days! All remaining Family Garden Days will feature a fun,
educational program from *Chicago Adventure Therapy*

*This Wednesday, we learned how to use a map and a compass - next month, we

Fresh Market and Shared Kitchen Updates

This month, we finished our summer cooking workshop series! We got to
prepare and taste delicious recipes like pineapple salsa, roasted beet
salad, Asian eggplant, and more! We are now gearing up for our fall
programming. We will continue our Wednesday cooking workshops, and we will
now have Family Fun Friday events where we will host movie nights,
gardening workshops, and cooking workshops!
Little Store Cooking Demos

The Little Store at 5254 S. Ashland

is now open *every Wednesday from 10am-1pm *for a Cooking Demo and Pop-up
Market. Every person who attends gets 1 free item, and we match Link!
Disability Farmers Program

Come down to the Storefront to check out this absolutely beautiful mural
from our friends at the Rose Center! We are so grateful for our
partnership, and we love having this amazing work of art in our community
space! Thank you to all of the artists who made this piece come to life
over the last few months.

2024 CSA Options

August CSA shares were very flavorful this month! Thank you to Guadalupe,
Star Farm team, Chicago Commons intern team, and volunteers for growing and
harvesting rainbow chard, kale, lettuce, collard greens, arugula, cabbage,
eggplant, beets, peppers, green onions, zucchini, bok choy, basil,
cilantro, and papalo!

In addition to these delicious vegetables and herbs from Star Farm, we
paired CSA shares with fruit from amazing local farms we work with
regularly. Shoutout to Ellis Family Farms, Mick Klug, and Nichols Farm &
Orchard for the apples, pears, peaches, plums, black raspberries, and
blueberries! Lastly, some of our members have been enjoying some rotations
of Publican Bread delivered fresh every week along with eggs from Down at
the Farms.
Shop Star Farm at 61st Street!

We’ve had another successful month at the 61st Street Farmers Market! We
are there *every Saturday, 9am-2pm,* selling a variety of vegetables, jams,
salsas, and tamales from Ms. Maria!
Star Farm Pop-up Markets

This month was filled with many more pop-ups! We are in an ongoing
partnership with many senior community centers around the city where
residents are able to use $50 vouchers to purchase fresh, local produce!
Additionally, in partnership with Chicago Commons, every Wednesday we have
a pop up at a different Chicago Commons location across the city.

We are looking forward to more senior pop ups in the month of September as
well as our partnership with the Chicago Park District to provide pop up
markets where kids can utilize $10 vouchers to purchase fresh, local
produce!
Farm Updates!

The farm is full of delicious food this time of year! We are bringing in
lots of eggplants, beets, carrots, and tomatoes. Our watermelons are also
ripening, and we had the pleasure of sharing our first melon of the season
during last week’s staff meeting!


We also recently started our 2nd cohort of interns from Chicago Commons.
They are learning about farmwork, programming, and outreach during their 10
weeks here on the farm.

This month, a group from Publicis Groupe hosted an AIDS Seed Quilt event at
our farm on Carpenter. During this event, participants used biodegradable
materials and seeds to create a beautiful quilt in remembrance of loved
ones and public figures that we have lost to AIDS.


Thank you to all who came together to create this quilt! We look forward to
hosting this event again next year and continuing to honor all who have
been impacted by HIV/AIDS.

This month, we also had the pleasure of being part of the Cook County Farm
Bureau’s 2024 Farm Crawl! Thank you to all who stopped by to learn about
our mission and see the farm in action!

Incubator Farmers

Our Incubator Farmers have been hosting Family Days at the Incubator Farm
all summer! Keep an eye out for upcoming volunteer days.


One of our awesome Incubator Farms, Tierra Y Paz, is looking for help with

Youth Programs

We just closed out our summer programming with SOS Children’s Village with
a fun harvest to table cooking demonstration! The youth prepared a
delicious kale chicken wrap where they were able to harvest the kale from
their own garden. We look forward to continuing this partnership in the
Fall!
Volunteer Updates

We had the pleasure of working with new volunteer groups this month,
including JMJ Phillips, Goldman Sachs, and Harrison Street Realty Group. We
also had returning groups, like our amazing partner Bain who complete their
2nd volunteer work day with us! Thank you to our volunteers who helped with
seeding, weeding, and laying down over 1,000 lbs of mulch on our walkways
in the farm.
Volunteer Sign-up

Interested in volunteering with us? We welcome volunteers every week, rain
or shine! Volunteer hours are typically anytime between 9am-2pm,
Monday-Friday.


During this season the farm is harvesting, planting, weeding, and more.
There is never a shortage of work, and all hands help!
