For the seventh time since 2017, the Southeastern African American Farmers’
Organic Network (SAAFON) <http://saafon.org/> and NSAC have partnered
together to offer a scholarship in memory of Cynthia Hayes
<http://saafon.org/about-us/our-co-founder-2/>, co-founder and former
director of SAAFON.

Cynthia was a founding member of several other non-profit organizations and
programs that worked to build power among Black growers. Her impact and
leadership were honored with several prestigious awards including the 2013
James Beard Award and the 2013 Southern Foodways Alliance John Egerton
Award. Cynthia was an inspirational force in the development of NSAC’s
equity platform and initiatives that followed. Her legacy lives on in the
work that continues, and we hope to honor her vision with this scholarship
empowering younger generations to continue this work.

This year, three students (one graduate and two undergraduate students)
will receive $5,000 scholarship awards each, along with opportunities to
engage with sustainable agriculture advocates and practitioners. Applications
open on March 27, 2025, and close on May 1 2025.
