That’s a Wrap on April! Here’s What Went Down

Hi Stephanie,

This month has been full of excitement as the growing season begins! We’ve
resumed farm activities with our neighbors and partners. We're thrilled to
welcome back students from Southside Occupational Academy (cover photo).
They’ve been doing fantastic work packing produce and helping out at the
farm every Wednesday. They're almost graduating, and they continuosly share
their excitement with us. Congratulations to them, we hope to see you again
soon! A big thank you to Regina and Payton for making this partnership
possible.

We’re also excited to have volunteers from Chicago Cares back on the farm!
Every Monday from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., they’ve been cleaning beds at
two farm sites, moving compost, and watering seedlings. We’re so grateful
for this partnership and the opportunity to meet new people. Thank you,
Camille, for coordinating everything!

In addition, we’re currently interviewing candidates for the first cohort
of the Chicago Commons internship. We can’t wait to welcome them to the
farm from June through August. We’re confident they’ll bring fresh energy
and ideas to our team.

CSA and Pop-Up Markets
Pop Up Markets

Corcoran Place Apartments

The Senior Residents were able to access local seasonal vegetables and
fruits, and learn together while talking about the food interactions with
some of the medications that they take. We're getting ready for the next
pop-up to be outdoors, and we’ll have green tomatoes, okras and an exciting
cooking demo with air fryer recipes.

RSSI Lincoln Park

Residents enjoyed the offer of local, organic and seasonal fresh food from
our pop-up. Most participants were Link users, and we had very interesting
conversations about food insecurity, food sovereignty and how farming and
agriculture practices can help people overcome challenging moments of their
lives while making an important positive impact in our economy, community
and planet.

Sylvester Broome Empowerment Village (SBEV Chicago)

Families were super happy to receive their 3 free items as part of our
partnership with SBEV. Children enjoyed apples and grapefruit.

Berry Manor Apartments Pop-up and Cooking demo

We had a delicious cooking demo which included roasted carrots, baby beets
and tofu, roasted tofu and veggie scramble including salted mushrooms, bell
peppers, baby leeks, and a delicious salad with apples, daikon radish,
cucumber, lemon and black pepper.

In all our pop-ups we welcome people to participate in our LINK CSA Pop-Up
program where residents can build a CSA bag and use their LINK card to
purchase and get 50% off!

2025 CSA

CSA members were able to enjoy delicious produce this month. We included
items such as arugula, spinach, ramps, Aronia berries, mushrooms, microgreens,
lettuce, turnips, radishes, apples, potatoes, yogurt.

Our highlight recipe for the month was the sauteed root vegetables that
customers could pair with our yogurt and Aronia berry offerings. Straight
from the farm, the sweet and the savory came together beautifully onto a
nutritious, beautiful plate!

Shout out to our Volunteers!
This month's volunteer highlight: Bernadette!

In addition to our volunteer programs, we have friends from the community
that want to lend a hand! This month we want to shout out Bernadette! She
is a software engineer and wants to understand how food is grown in our
community. In April, Bernadette helped assemble CSA bags, organize our
produce and materials at the storefront, and worked with our farmers on
Wolcott! At Wolcott, she pulled out enormous weeds, removed trash, and
prepared our beds for compost. Star Farm is truly grateful for Bernadette!
Corporate Work Days

Natures fynd

Natures Fynd is a company that produces microbe-based proteins for meat and
dairy substitutes, and they helped us clean and prepare our lot on Laflin
this month! Over 40 of their employees showed up and together we removed
burlap and weeds from beds; the team also hauled wheelbarrows of compost to
each bed and leveled it out. Thanks to Natures Fynd, our farmers have been
planting away! We got to connect, chat, and laugh all morning! Make sure to

Fresh Market Updates

We’re so excited to announce the soft launch of our Fresh Market and
Community Dining Room this July! To mark the beginning of this new chapter,
we’ll be hosting a ribbon cutting ceremony and inviting the community to
join us in celebration. As part of this project, we’re also planning a
beautiful outdoor dining space where visitors can gather, eat, and connect.
A big thank you to the Chicago Community Trust for sharing our opening in
your newsletter. We’re deeply grateful for your continued support. It means
so much to us and the communities we serve. We’re also thrilled to
celebrate the grand openings of the other incredible projects you’ve
uplifted. It’s an honor to be part of this work alongside such inspiring
partners.

equitable food system becomes a reality.
