May has been a very exciting month of welcoming people back to our farm!

All of our community programs have kicked off and we’re so happy to welcome
back our friends from Rose Center, as well as get to know our new interns
from Chicago Commons and this semester's students from De Paul. It’s always
so inspiring to see how people like to be involved and actively contribute
in building this project.

This month's successes!

This month has also been one of successes! Our funding request for Star
Farm Production and Food Safety Enhancement for Operational Growth and
Career development was approved by the Innovative Agriculture Micro-Grants
for Chicago (IAM-Chi). Thank you to the University of Illinois Extension,
the Illinois Farm Service Agency and the USDA for making this possible. We
were also awarded a grant by The Public Health Fund, a collaborative effort
between United Way Metro Chicago and the Chicago Department of Public
Health. We're so grateful! Finally, a very nice surprise came in the mail
this week. Amy Bizzarri’s wonderful book “111 places in Chicago that you

Our community programs have kicked off!
Rose Center is back in the house!

The Rose Center volunteers were a delight to work with this month! They
packed produce for the CSA orders we delivered to households across the
city, learned a little about the nutrition that our food provides and
helped at the farm. It's awesome to see how excited they are to play a
direct role in increasing food access to local, healthy food for other
Chicago residents.
Southwest Organizing Project

This month, we partnered with Southwest Organizing Project (SWOP), an
institution for youth groups in Southwest Chicago, to expose them to urban
agriculture as a career path. We kicked off the day’s volunteer work with
some brief discussion of quotes from Robin Kimmerer’s Braiding Sweetgrass,
a book that shares indigenous wisdom for accomplishing these goals. From
there, the volunteers proceeded to water crops and knock out several days
worth of weeding work in a few hours at Laflin Farm. Thank you for coming!
Chicago Commons Interns off to a Strong Start!

We have started with the first cohort of five amazing volunteers. According
to their preferences, they have been doing farm work, such as harvesting,
processing and cleaning beds or helping with Pop Up Markets and Cooking
Demos. Many of them have previous agriculture experience, and we're very
excited to learn from them too. Thank you for choosing Star Farm and thank
you Chicago Commons for being our
De Paul Students have been awesome!

Addison and Jack, students from DePaul University, are completing their
25-hour requirement for the Community and Urban Agriculture course with us
this spring. They visit us weekly and have been contributing to harvesting,
planting, and cleaning, as well as helping prep and pack for our CSA
deliveries. During this time, they’ve gotten to know our interns and
volunteers gaining a deeper understanding of how food, people, and place
are connected. Shoutout to Howard for making this possible!

Sylvester Broome Empowerment Village (SBEV Chicago)

Families and children have enjoyed the seasonal products, and it's always
excited to see kids getting excited about fresh food!

Chicago Commons Family Hubs

We just started our weekly visits to the Chicago Commons Family Hubs. We've
enjoyed meeting families and children, who have tried and enjoyed roasted
veggies from our Cooking Demos, and they were thrilled by the chamomile we
brought. We're so happy that we'll get to see them every month!

Nourishing Hope

We're excited to announce the launch of our partnership with Nourishing
Hope! Together, we'll be hosting monthly Pop-Up Markets and Cooking Demos
to connect with the community and share information about our CSA program
and benefits for SNAP participants.

One Family

We were invited to run a Nutrition Workshop by our partners, which focused
on the importance of having a colorful diet. This was reflected in our
Cooking Demo menu, which included different dips to share, such as
tzatziki, cilantro, fennel & mint dips to complement daily meals.

In all our pop-ups we welcome people to participate in our LINK CSA Pop-Up
program where residents can build a CSA bag and use their LINK card to

May CSA

This month, we delivered CSAs to 74 households in May.

We have had some exciting produce to distribute across the city. We
offered microgreens,
lettuce, baby arugula and kale that we harvested from our farms. We have
also been able to include asparagus, rhubarb, radishes, mushrooms, ramps,
apples and turnips from local farmers we partner with. Star Farm thanks the
farmers on the team as well as Ellis Farms and Down at the Farms for making
this and future offerings possible. The season is warming, and these
nutrient-dense bags are going to keep getting heavier!

Our Community Dining space is coming soon!

This month construction has began for our Community Dining space. We’re
installing a pergola and tables will be coming soon just in time for warmer
temperatures! Come visit us to see the before and after of this project. If
you can’t make it, we’ll keep you updated and let you know so you can join
us for the opening.

Please consider supporting our existing programs in the farm and with our
community partners, but also help us finalize our capital project with
equipment for the Fresh Market and the Community Dining Room ($30,000), our
outdoor farm to table dining space ($35,000), and operational costs of
$60,000 toward digital devices, rent and utilities, and vehicle
