We were invited because Martha Boyd, our former board member, was instrumental in leading this work early on. However, Martha has not been involved in the work for a while now, and the ordinance was introduced in January without AUA knowing about it. We have not once said that we support the ordinance, because we don't. We were present as co-hosts on Tuesday to listen. </li></ul><ul><li>I wholeheartedly agree that CCGA more authentically represents community gardens. But AUA does not just support/work with urban farms. In the last year, we have provided legal, financial, administrative, technical, and equipment support to over 60 community gardens in need of water access, provided thousands of dollars in grant funds to community gardens in the midst of the pandemic, and produced programming and resources that are relevant to both urban farms and community gardens.</li></ul><div>I think we ("we" meaning the necessary representatives from both organizations) could significantly benefit from having a conversation about ways to cultivate a more collaborative, supportive, transparent, communicative, and accountable relationship. I have suggested this several times to you and other CCGA members over the course of the last year. I would like to suggest it again. After that conversation, we followed up with the City yesterday morning and confirmed that community gardens CAN be ticketed through the weed ordinance, which is contrary to what had been previously communicated by the City and Alderman Hopkins Office. Prior to yesterday, AUA had not made a decision about whether or not we supported the ordinance, but given that information, we are not in support. </div><div><br></div><div>We were invited to a conversation with Alderman Hopkin's office and IEC tomorrow afternoon to provide concrete suggestions for improving the ordinance to ensure that it is equitable and represents the interests of all growers throughout the City, not just owner-occupied lots.
