This green infrastructure project converted the site’s east parking lot into a sanctuary of fertile soil, native prairie plants and trees. This project is a wonderful example of the environmental benefits provided by the District’s public recreational leases with other governmental entities. Soil amendments from the District played an important role in converting an old asphalt lot at the boat launch into a lush, fertile field of nearly three acres, designed to collect runoff and spur more tree and plant growth. The District contributed 100 semitruck loads of EQ biosolids and EQ Compost. Additionally, the site can hold up to two inches of water, which is more than 200,000 gallons of water each time it rains that previously would have runoff and flowed into the Cal-Sag Channel. </span></p>

The stability of the chemicals makes them difficult to degrade which is why they are often called “forever chemicals.” PFAS are in countless commercial, consumer, and industrial products and are acknowledged by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to be widely present in the environment.</span></div>

The MWRD’s seven water reclamation plants (WRPs) do not produce nor use PFAS but are passive receivers of these chemicals discharged to local sewers. </span></div>

The MWRD’s WRPs were not designed to remove these chemicals during the treatment process.
