Totally agree about the wear/tear due to heavy foot traffic in many areas. </div><div>Have you approached Bennett Lawson, the alderman, about access to city resources (like woodchips, etc) ? Bennett is a pretty good guy and I'm sure that he or someone in his office might be able to direct you better than 311. Also, you and your neighbors can call a tree trimming company ( Davey Tree, Bartlett Tree etc and request donation of wood chips though you will need wheelbarrows, pitchforks and people to move the woodchips quickly after delivery. Streets and San may be able to supply some of the tools on a loan basis the same as they did for this past weekends clean-up efforts around the city. I believe that the Aldernan's offices coordinated that with the community groups who were out cleaning up. Caution -- wood chips from tree services are usually from living trees and should not be put around plants or shrubbery. The wood is still "green" and it takes several months for the energy (heat) to cure out of it.
