<p><font style="BACKGROUND-COLOR: silver" color="silver"><p>"Then I must try her maid once more," said Amelius,
resignedly. He took his hat and umbrella. "Don¡¯t leave me, old fellow,
" he resumed as he opened the door. "This is the turning-point of my life.
I¡¯m sorely in need of a friend."</p><p>"Not at all. Not at all. I
want to do it. I wouldn¡¯t have been happy if I couldn¡¯
t."</p><p>"Now, Loo, listen!</p><p>Fortunately the wounds the soldiers had
received in their struggle with the bears were slight, and merely required
dressing.</p><p>¡®If we weren¡¯t among Americans, I should say we
were consorting with Russians,¡¯ said a fellow-countryman in my
ear.</p><p>Her downcast face finished the sentence. Amelius felt the bare
idea of being Mr. Farnaby¡¯s travelling companion make his blood run
cold. And Mr. Farnaby, on his side, reciprocated the sentiment. "I will
write constantly, dear," Regina resumed; "and you will write back,
won¡¯t you? Say you love me; and promise to come tomorrow morning,
before we go."</p><p>¡®I find that some foolish people have been
talking in Barchester about my daughter,¡¯ said the archdeacon; ¡®
and I wish to ask Mrs Proudie ¡ª¡¯</p><p>He had the confirmed neatness
of his profession, but his face looked worn and worried.</p><p></p><p>¡ª
Lowell.</p><p>¡®And is likely to remain so, from all I hear,¡¯
said Mrs Proudie, and the scratched hand was at once drawn
back.</p><p>¡®I am a little too stout.¡¯</p><p>¡®No; I was
not wishing to argue,¡¯ answered Lady Lufton, almost humbly; ¡®
but I was desirous of excusing myself to you, so that you should not think
me cruel in withholding my consent. I wished to make you believe that I was
doing the best for my son.¡¯</p><p>"You mean the threat is known ¡ª the
reason for the ¡ª?"</p><p>"None in especial," answered Catharine, abashed at
her own eagerness ¡ª"none, perhaps, excepting my fears for your
safety."</p><p>"I won¡¯t come the heavy uncle; but you know the
drawbacks?"</p><p>Its size was, however, sufficient to justify a hope that
it would resist the action of the warm currents until the cold weather set
in. Hobson would not allow himself to doubt; his despair arose rather from
the knowledge that the fruit of all his cares, anxieties, and dangers must
eventually be swallowed up by the deep, and it was no wonder that he could
take no interest in the works that were going on.</p><p>And he was a hard
man who had not played with anything so innocent as sweetmeats for many
years!</p><p>"Why, yes, George," he said, noncommittally, there are two or
three that offer a good chance if a man had money enough. I notice blocks
of stock being offered on ¡®change now and then by one person and
another. It would be good policy to pick these things up as they¡¯re
offered, and then to see later if some of the other stockholders won¡¯
t want to sell out. Green and Coates, now, looks like a good proposition to
me. If I had three or four hundred thousand dollars that I thought I could
put into that by degrees I would follow it up. It only takes about thirty
per cent. of the stock of any railroad to control it. Most of the shares
are scattered around so far and wide that they never vote, and I think two
or three hundred thousand dollars would control that road." He mentioned
one other line that might be secured in the same way in the course of
time.</p><p>In these days also, he and Steger were constantly to be met
with in courts of law, for he was constantly being reexamined in some
petition in bankruptcy. They were heartbreaking days, but he did not
flinch. He wanted to stay in Philadelphia and fight the thing to a finish ¡ª
putting himself where he had been before the fire; rehabilitating himself
in the eyes of the public. He felt that he could do it, too, if he were not
actually sent to prison for a long term; and even then, so naturally
optimistic was his mood, when he got out again. But, in so far as
Philadelphia was concerned, distinctly he was dreaming vain
dreams.</p><p>"Robert the Third, with consent, advice, and authority of the
most mighty David, Duke of Rothsay, Lieutenant of the Kingdom, and alter
ego; in whose favour, indeed, the good King, wearied with the fatigues and
troubles of sovereignty, will, I guess, be well disposed to abdicate. So
long live our brave young monarch, King David the Third!
</p><p></p><p>"Indeed, they do." Her vanity prinked slightly at
this.</p><p>"No, sir," replied Norman; "the wind is not strong enough to
fill the sail, and if it were, I fear it comes from the wrong quarter. If
so," he added, pointing to the south, "we may see Fort Franklin before Fort
Confidence."</p><p>"No, of course, Mother. May I ask him down? He CAN
support a wife; and Aunt Em says his brother has no issue."</p></font></p>
