SUMMARY:Learn More about the Community Roots Demonstration Garden
DESCRIPTION:Please join us to learn more about plans for a combination community/demonstration garden in Skinner Park\, and to meet other people interested in growing food together.\nThe Community Roots Demonstration Garden\, planned to be built this spring in Skinner Park\, will be an outdoor classroom space that will provide Chicagoans of all ages greater access to gardening education. Designed for both kids and families who want to learn more about growing their own food\, the site will be able to host a range of workshops highlighting native species\, pollinating plants\, composting\, rainwater harvesting\, season extending techniques\, and a variety of other topics that help inform and excite both seasoned and novice gardeners. The outdoor classroom will serve as a central hub for Chicago Park District-sponsored garden education\, as well as opening itself to garden groups and educators to host their own workshops and events. \nOverall\, this project was proposed as a way of highlighting the incredible diversity of experiences that gardening has to offer – in both growing methods and in community & youth engagement techniques. While focusing in large part on growing fresh produce\, the garden also plans to feature fruit trees and berries\, native plantings and digging beds. Further\, a variety of styles of raised beds and planters will be featured\, and different areas of the garden will serve to teach visitors about a variety of topics from healing and sensory plants to companion planting\, rainwater harvesting\, insects\, and more. \nHalf of the garden space will be dedicated to community gardening\, and the remaining half for teaching and learning – with the hopes that excess produce on the “demonstration side” will be donated to a local food pantry or organization in need.

DESCRIPTION:Join us at the volunteer kickoff meeting for creating an Edible Landscape garden at The Plant. All that plus a light lunch. \nExactly what gardener-led workshops are you offering this year?\nHere are the topics: \n\n\nCreative Community Building in Community Gardens\nA healthy vibrant community garden is one where people feel involved\, engaged\, and joyful\, whether they are gardeners or not. Community gardens are ideal places for communities to gather for fun\, for social justice\, for fellowship. To think outside the flower box\, come to this session where community gardeners will share creative ways they have activated community gardening space beyond gardening.\nCommunity Gardens as Message Sites for Soil and Water Security\nThe United Nations General Assembly designated 2015 for yearlong soil celebrations\, as a way to increase understanding of the importance of soil for food security and essential ecosystem functions. Join this session to discuss how community gardens are urgent and essential social places for understanding the importance of soil and water in everyday life. Community gardeners can leverage community gardens as important dissemination stations for messaging the crucial role that soil and water play in global health.\nBuilding Garden Structures\nThis session walks participants through building trellises and compost bins in a unique\, hands-on way. Participants will build these structures and learn about their usefulness in the garden.\nEdible Landscaping with a Permaculture Twist\nFruit trees\, berry bushes\, brambles and more. Learn how to apply the basic principles of permaculture to create an edible perennial landscape in your community garden. Often referred to as “forest gardening” or “food forests”\, panel presenters will discuss how these principles are being applied to private\, small backyards\, to community gardens in Chicago vacant lots\, and to large school campuses to create lush\, bountiful\, and low maintenance gardens\nDigging in – Transforming Garden Conflict into Constructive Growth\nConflict in a community garden can be disheartening\, especially when the words “community garden” strike up images of everyone working together in harmony. However\, conflict is a natural part of relationships and can be quite transformative. This interactive session will explore creative approaches to transforming conflict in which we view conflict as a valuable opportunity to grow and increase our understanding of ourselves and others. The session will offer resources that can hopefully strengthen and build not only your garden team\, but other teams in your life\, as well. Narrative mediation is a resource that helps us think of conflicts as a story and opens possibilities to growing new stories of relationships we prefer. Appreciative Inquiry provides a shift from traditional problem solving to envisioning possibilities for the future based upon appreciating and valuing what we are doing well. These approaches do not ignore conflict or problems\, but rather recognize conflict as a desire for something else. This workshop will be facilitated by Kristin Bodiford\, who teaches in both the Masters of Conflict Resolution and Graduate School of Social Work programs at Dominican University\nSpring Preparation and Planting Tips\nSpring is an exciting time- seeds are started\, soil warms up\, garden teams come together. DESCRIPTION:Free Adult Workshop: Honeybees and Horticulture\nBeekeeping is an ancient craft\, practiced in all world cultures except the arctic. Deep respect is acquired from learning about what bees and other migrating animals eat in our neighborhoods. Foraging only nectar and pollen\, honeybees produce clean\, healthy food that embodies our environment in taste\, texture and beauty. Prairie remnants provide an amazing pallet of perennials and annual wild flowers that many of us don’t recognize. The presentation will show the trees\, shrubs and other flowering plants that are essential for insect health and which abound in the Chicago region in restoration prairies\, neglected lots\, and local backyards. In this class we will discuss how seeds sprout\, and how you can re-create the right germination conditions indoors or in your outdoor garden plot. We will talk about seed-starting dates\, sanitation\, best seed-starting mixes\, navigating the information on a seed packet and why wind or a fan is important for young plants! \nFor the hands-on portion we will: \n-demonstrate the correct level of soil moisture\, watering methods and planting depth \n-show a variety of different containers for planting seeds\, and setups for achieving optimum light and temperature \n-do germination tests \n-go over next seedling’ next steps’ – fertilizing\, potting up\, and transplanting \nYou will go home with your own tray of seeds to germinate\, as well as more for planting later!

We encourage you to bring your own seeds to swap with others! \nThe UIC Heritage Garden seed library is a mobile treasure box full of seeds\, collected from the Heritage Garden\, Jane Addams Hull-House Museum\, and various gardens around the globe.
