July 2023 Connecting People To Nature On Chicago's West Side Artist's Garden Exhibit: Fairy Garden Opens July 5th $5 per Adult/Free for kids, GPCA Members and West Side Community The fairies are coming 🧚✨Enter the whimsical world of wonder and architecture of our resident fairies in this summer’s Fairy Garden exhibit! The Fairy Garden features a variety of magical fairy houses set creatively within the beautiful flowers and greenery of the Artist’s Garden. Classic flowers including hollyhock, sunflower, sweet alyssum, and nasturtium are joined by enchanting varieties such as Salvia ‘Fairy Queen’, ‘Dreamland Pink’ Zinnia, and ‘Spellbound White Blush’ Petunia. The mini-homes represent a wide range of design styles and materials, limited only by the builders’ imaginations. This seasonal outdoor exhibit will open on July 5th and run through September 17th, 2023. Admission: $5 for Adults; Free for kids, people who live in Garfield Park and GPCA members. We invite you to submit an application to be one of three new selected designers to participate in this year's event via our Designer Open Call Form. Apply Here Inaugural Juneteenth Picnic at the Garfield Park Conservatory The inaugural Juneteenth Picnic at the Conservatory was a blast! On Wednesday, June 14th, we welcomed community members into the City Garden for an early Juneteenth celebration. We had so much fun making flags and pressed flower bookmarks; and enjoyed performances by Azania Drums and the Maila Sylla dancers. Herb Botanicals provided a delicious Hibiscus & Lemon Balm Lemonade and Chef Brandon Lagrone showcased an interactive food demonstration of sauteed turmeric and paprika turnip greens prepared root to tip. This food demo served as an introduction to Chef Brandon's Root to Tip series, with further programming coming this fall! Participants can upgrade fabric provided, plus one personal item or redesign fabric of choice using traditional West African batik printing folds. Workshop includes access to the materials, fabric, and instructions for the workshop. This in-person tree ID Walk will be hosted in both English and Spanish. We will explore the trees of beautiful and historic Garfield Park. Interested children are welcome, but must be accompanied by an adult. The walk will take place outdoors, rain or shine. Register soon to reserve a spot! Pre-registration is required. The program is free however donations are appreciated to off-set programming costs. All donations will be split 50/50 between the non-profit educational organizations Openlands and Garfield Park Conservatory Alliance. Join the Waitlist Origami Open House Saturday, July 8; 12pm-3pm Free On the 2nd Saturday of the month the Chicago Area Origami Society presents a free drop-in Origami Open House to our visitors. Adults and kids accompanied by an adult are welcome. Free and open to the public. Registration is not required. If you’d like to visit the Conservatory before or after joining this program, please book a reservation. Bonsai w/ Chicago Bonsai Club Wednesday, July 19; 6pm-7:30pm Free Learn about the ancient art of growing bonsai from the Chicago Bonsai Club, a chapter of the Midwest Bonsai Society. Bring your bonsai trees to work on or just come to watch. The meeting is open to any interested adults, drop-in anytime from 6pm-7:30pm in the Classroom. Potting soil and wire will be provided, and some plant materials and pots will be available at a nominal cost. Ask A Master Gardener NATURE EDUCATION PROGRAMS Inspiring Children & Caretakers With The Power Of Nature URBAN ROOTS TEEN ENVIRONMENTAL JUSTICE PROGRAM The Urban Roots teen docents are back for the summer! This summer the teens will be learning about environmental justice, nature wellness and interpretation, gardening, and embarking on internships around the Conservatory. A primary focus of the Conservatory and the Urban Roots program is to provide equitable access to nature, connecting local youth who have been under-represented and excluded in the outdoor movement with culturally relevant and inclusive nature programs and experiences. The Urban Roots program helps support their well-being and development, while cultivating a new generation of conservationists to advocate for the health of the planet. Wild Wednesdays Wednesdays, 4pm-7pm Free with visit Join GPCA’s Nature Educators on Wednesday evenings to explore and discover together! We will get our hands dirty, play, and discover new things about plants, animals and nature. During the summer months, this program will be outside in our Play and Grow Garden, where kids can get a little wild as they climb on our tinker tree, build a fort, dig (or make cupcakes) in our pebble pond and run around. We will learn about plants, make art projects, conduct experiments to better understand nature, and much more!
