UPCOMING EVENTS
Thursday, July 13th - The Fairy Rings: Gathering Series SOIL (https://socialecologies.us9.list-manage.com/track/click?u=949625f8e7341ba1ba98ebe7c&id=6e3f09e66a&e=4e15540e89) in Brooklyn, NY with Newtown Creek Alliance

We're excited to participate in the final event on SOIL (https://socialecologies.us9.list-manage.com/track/click?u=949625f8e7341ba1ba98ebe7c&id=212f99aa57&e=4e15540e89) . Participants will receive biochar samples and a guided tour of the Kingsland Wildflowers Green Roof and NCA Greenhouse led by NCA’s horticulturist Brenda Suchilt. Homemade mushroom soup will be served. The event is free to attend, but space is limited.

Friday, July 14th - Stormwater Mitigation Workshop (https://socialecologies.us9.list-manage.com/track/click?u=949625f8e7341ba1ba98ebe7c&id=33935bd552&e=4e15540e89) in Queens, NY with Newtown Creek Alliance

Join us for a hands-on workshop (https://socialecologies.us9.list-manage.com/track/click?u=949625f8e7341ba1ba98ebe7c&id=41d68b6893&e=4e15540e89)  to build out a bioswale for water retention at Plank Road. Since 2013, Newtown Creek Alliance has been working at Plank Road (58th Road in Maspeth, Queens) to revitalize the historic street end into a rejuvenated public shoreline. We'll also be talking about the benefits of regenerative land management practices and are thrilled to visit Newtown Creek.

SOIL KEEPERS COURSES RETURN IN THE FALL!

We're excited to announce the next round of The Soil Keepers (https://socialecologies.us9.list-manage.com/track/click?u=949625f8e7341ba1ba98ebe7c&id=5703e3161e&e=4e15540e89) trainings with certifications. These course are low-cost professionalization opportunities for community-members to become soil science experts and strengthen advocacy for their local environment.

In September we'll be offering in-person courses in Chicago on the northside and on the southside (locations TBD). In October, we'll be offering an advanced core-course for those who have completed the introductory course.

We want to bring our 30+ years experience to as many people as possible! ONGOING WORK
SOIL AND SOUL: GREATER GRAND CROSSING SUMMER 2023 (https://socialecologies.us9.list-manage.com/track/click?u=949625f8e7341ba1ba98ebe7c&id=f0684e647b&e=4e15540e89)

We are proud to be a part of Soil and Soul, a series coordinated by 6018North, which energizes community gardens as healing hubs and economic generators in Greater Grand Crossing through land stewardship, conversational meals, performances, and workshops.

We have been deepening our partnership Emil Hirsch High School, working with students and other teaching artists in the school courtyard to create a phytoremediation lab, food garden, and public stage. Through phytoremediation, students create a mitigation process to remove toxins and regenerate the soil in a cost-effective, environmentally friendly way.

PUBLICATIONS
We are spending summer finishing our research and writing on several publications that will be ready this Autumn.

- The first of a reader series Land-Place-Belonging holding fresh conversations with experts and practitioners living and leading others in provocative questions of what it means to be caretakers of land.

- Two new publications in the Ground Truthing series. Ground Truthing: Red Hook, Brooklyn and Ground Truthing: North Lawndale, Chicago. A Ground Truthing is a deep mapping of a specific urban locality and landscape folding in cultural geography, urban ecology, soil science social histories of a site.
