Black History Month at MWRD
February is Black History Month and this year MWRD is celebrating with a series of events. On February 4th we raised the African American Flag at MWRD. On the 11th, we honored State African American elected leaders Jesse White, Secretary of State, Kwame Raoul, Attorney General, Roland Burris, former U.S. Senator. Three more celebrations are yet to come. So please join us at one of these events as we honor African American achievements. McCook Reservoir Tunnel Tour
On January 3rd, alongside a few of MWRD employees, Commissioner Du Buclet was one of the first commissioners to tour the McCook Reservoir Des Plaines Inflow Tunnel. This tunnel is part of an elaborate system of tunnels and reservoirs that keep flood water out of your basement and sewage out of our fresh water supply.
Illinois Monarch Project honored for Monarch Conservation work by MWRD
Commissioner Du Buclet presented a MWRD resolution to the the Illinois Monarch Project for their efforts to help monarch butterflies thrive in Illinois. There to accept the award were Iris Caldwell & Klaudia Klukinska of the UIC Energy Resources Center. 2020 Census is a national population count of all residents of the United States. Locally, the results of the count will determine how much neighborhoods and communities will receive in federal funds for healthcare, affordable housing, transportation, etc. and will help determine government representation at all levels.

Did you know that using excessive road salt can cause damage to aquatic life and harm our pets? This winter Go Easy on the Salt! Salt does not go away after we spread it. Once the snow melts, it follows the water to our lakes and rivers and can become toxic to aquatic life. Spread salt lightly or use calcium chloride or magnesium chloride which are considered a “greener” options, if used in small amounts. The Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum founded in 1857, as the Chicago Academy of Sciences, has provided a place where positive relationships between people and nature have been built for over 160 years.
