September 2020 Newsletter The Flowers of Monet opens September 5! Adult admission $5, children and members free. In partnership with the Art Institute of Chicago, the Garfield Park Conservatory & Gardens presents The Flowers of Monet in the Artist's Garden. Inspired by Claude Monet’s paintings, horticulturists will bring his canvases to life with asters, dahlias, nasturtiums, rose standards, and many other blooms. A living wall inspired by the Water Lilies series will provide an unusual interpretation of his work. A reservation is required for both a visit to The Flowers of Monet and a visit to the Main Outdoor Gardens. The entrance to The Flowers of Monet garden is a 4-7 minute walk from the Main Gardens, you can book both tickets for one day! Click the button below to get started. VISIT 2nd Wednesday Lecture: Monet and Chicago Wednesday, September 9; 6pm-7pm CST Cost: Free with RSVP; donations welcome Join us for a special talk and garden walk with Gloria Groom, Chair of European Painting and Sculpture, David and Mary Winton, Green Curator at the Art Institute of Chicago, and Peter Vrotsos, Deputy Director of Horticulture of Chicago Park District's Conservatories. Learn about the Monet and Chicago exhibit at The Art Institute of Chicago during Gloria's presentation. Immediately following, Peter will take us on a garden walk through The Flowers of Monet to describe how plant selections were inspired by Monet's influences. Monet and Chicago is on view at the Art Institute from September 5 to January 18. RSVP Tiger Swallowtail in our Urban Demonstration Garden. Did you know we have 10 acres of beautiful outdoor gardens for you to roam? Outdoor Gardens are open! Reservations required. Open 10am-5pm Wednesday through Sunday. VIRTUAL PROGRAMS Botanical Drawing: Virtual Course Tuesdays from 11am-1pm on September 15, 22, 29 & October 6, 13, 20 Cost: $180/General, $144/Members or Volunteers. Materials approx. $40. Scholarships available. We have teamed up with artist Katia Pérez Fuentes to offer a 6-week online drawing course! Perez will lead us through a series of practices using line, texture, and patterns found in nature with inspiration from the plant life at the Conservatory. Intro to Winter Growing Succulents: Care & Propagation Saturday, September 26 from 11am-12pm Cost: $25 / $20 for Members or Volunteers (plus optional add-ons for soil and plant material) Join Emilia Arellano, GPCA’s Greenhouse Coordinator, for a virtual class on easy care succulents that grow actively in the winter! Learn how to care for succulents throughout the year and how to expand your collection via three propagation techniques–leaf cuttings, stem cuttings and offsets. Sign me up! Music Under Glass D-Composed Presents D-Compressed: A Time for Healing Wednesday, September 30 from 7pm-8pm Cost: Free with RSVP; donations welcome Join us to reflect, relax and heal with D-Composed! Enjoy their popular yoga & chamber concept, D-Compressed, transformed with a focus on restoration and healing. Starting with meditation, lead by Asia Jones of Trap Yoga, to put you in the right headspace for the sonic journey we are about to go on. Each song is meant to celebrate the brilliance and resilience of our community through themes of self-care, strength, and identity. You’ll hear song selections from contemporary and modern Black composers such as Carlos Simon, Solange, Dev Hynes, and Beyoncé. By the Hand Club + Austin Pop-up Market Shop the Austin Market at 423 North Laramie Avenue Hours: Monday, Wednesday, Friday from 2pm-6pm This week we are donating 131.75 lbs of produce, grown and harvested at the Conservatory, to the By The Hand Club’s Austin Harvest Market. We are grateful to have a new partnership and were part of their official grand opening last Monday, August 24! This amazing initiative is led by youth who wanted to uplift their community. Due to decades of racial inequities highlighted by the killing of George Floyd and the COVID-19 crisis, the youth gathered in healing circles with local police and athletes to process recent violence and brainstorm solutions for their community.
