Hello Senator Duckworth,
Congratulations on your selection as Vice-Chair of the Democratic National
Committee and thank you for your continued service in the Illinois Senate.
Englewood Veterans Garden is just one garden built for and by veterans.
Many veterans steward other gardens or lead senior programs in our
community gardens. Chicago is home to hundreds of community gardens, and
the Chicago Community Gardeners Association (CCGA) has created a network of
gardeners that is truly gardener-designed and led, to ensure the
sustainability and vibrancy of Chicago gardens for years to come.
We invite and entreat you to give a pre-recorded welcome to our gardeners
at our March 20, 2021 Virtual Spring Conference. We’ve all experienced a
deeply challenging year that has tested our resilience and strengthened our
connections beyond measure. This year our gardens flourished despite
lockdowns, and with guidelines, served as vital resources in our
communities for good nutrition, physical activity, social connections, and
environmental stewardship amidst the pandemic.
As a veteran of combat and an Illinois native, we hope a short pre-recorded
welcome to our conference is something we can look forward to from you. Our
communications team can facilitate a link or your team can send the video
to them. The conference theme “Connections through Gardening: Plants,
People and the Environment,” builds on our foundation and aims to explore
and celebrate the interconnectedness of our shared garden work. Our virtual
platform will create a unique space for gardeners to get inspired, connect,
and have conversations that shape and support best practices for
sustainable living and growing in Chicago. If you'd like to see more about
us, here is our website.
