FEBRUARY 2023 Connecting People To Nature On Chicago's West Side SPRING FLOWER SHOW: BEE'S KNEES February 15 - May 14 Reservations required | Free; donations accepted The Garfield Park Conservatory’s Spring Flower Show tradition returns February 15th! This year’s show, “Bee’s Knees” is a peek into the wondrous relationship between bees and blooms. Beautiful blooming spring bulbs such as tulips, daffodils and hyacinth, will be featured this year alongside hydrangeas, delphiniums, azaleas, and more. Empty observation and demo hives from GPC’s beekeeping program are set amongst the blooms, giving a glimpse into the world of a bee. Reservations are required to visit the Conservatory & Gardens. We use a timed-entry reservation system as a way to better spread visitation throughout the day to reduce traffic congestion and visitor crowding, making everyone’s experience more enjoyable. Reservations are free, donations are welcome.  A reservation to visit the Conservatory includes access to indoor and outdoor gardens, including our Spring Flower Show: Bee’s Knees. (Please note, the EMG Children's Garden remains closed for renovations). Reservations can be made online up to 30 days in advance. Walk-up reservations are prioritized for Garfield Park & West Side neighbors and members if available.   BLACK HISTORY MONTH AT GPC! We celebrate Black History all year long, but we have a special lineup of activities and events for you and the fam this February in honor of Black History Month! Check out each program or activity below for more detail. Programs are in-person, free (donations accepted), and no registration required, unless otherwise noted. Black History Month programs are made possible in part by Blue Cross Blue Shield of Illinois and the PNC Foundation. Additional funding for programs this month provided by The MacArthur Fund for Culture, Equity and the Arts at Prince, the Illinois Arts Council Agency, the National Endowment for the Arts and DCASE. Storytelling with Mama Edie Saturday, 2/4; 11am-11:45am Free Come and experience an interactive storytelling and percussion performance from Mama Edie in celebration of Black History Month. The performance will honor the importance of plants and other vegetation as related to the agricultural genius of George Washington Carver. Mama Edie will weave in stories about Ananse, the Spider from Ghana, as the kente fabric, also created by the people of Ghana, consists of patterns inspired by the webs that spiders weave. Learn more Black History Month activities for kids and families Saturdays, 2/4 & 2/18; 10:30am-2pm Free Check out drop-in activities in Horticulture Hall that celebrate Black culture and show how Black folks have used plants throughout history. These programs are drop in and no registration is required. You can stop by and interact with the materials at the station for as long as you want to. Adults and young ones of all ages are welcome. Learn more Photo by Sulyiman Stokes Family Drum Workshop & Presentation with Azania Drum Sunday, 2/5; 12pm-2pm Free with registration Join us for an afternoon of family fun and community building with Azania Drum. During this workshop, core members of the Azania Drum collective will provide participants with a brief history on the rich cultural significance of Djembe and Dunun drums, as well an instructional demonstration – allowing participants to explore sound and produce collective rhythms utilizing the drums. This program is offered in collaboration with Music Moves Chi. Learn more & Register Cooking Class for Garfield Park Families Wednesday, 2/8; 5:45pm-7:30pm Free; invite only We invite local Garfield Park families who are interested in cooking and eating a meal together to celebrate Black culinary history at the Conservatory. This in-person, free cooking class will be taught by an educator from UIC, and will include dinner! "Mercy Me, Mercy Me!" How African American Artists Addressed the Environment Wednesday, 2/15; 5:30pm-6:30pm Free with registration From earthworks to recycled art, an increasing number of African American artists have turned their creative energies to exploring the earth, its resources, and issues of sustainability and social justice. Join us for this special lecture with artist Juarez Hawkins. We will explore the myriad ways several artists addressed the environment in their work, including Martin Puryear (born 1941, Washington, DC), Chakaia Booker (born 1953, Newark, NJ), and Candace Hunter (born circa 1955, Chicago, IL). Learn more & Register Photo by Sulyiman Stokes Family Dance Workshop with Maila Sylla Sunday, 2/19; 12pm-2pm Free with registration Spend an afternoon enjoying some family fun and community building with West African Dance instructor Maila Sylla. During this high energy workshop, Maila will teach core African dance movements from Senegal, Guinea, Mali, Ivory Coast, and more! This program is offered in collaboration with Music Moves Chi. Learn more & Register Film Screening Shorts Santé and Pictures Only Wednesday, 2/22; 6pm-7:30pm Free with registration We are hosting this event as another opportunity to provide a platform to BIPOC Chicago based artists. This evening includes two short films followed by a dialogue with African American filmmakers Taylor Mason and Charles Honeywood. We welcome participation from our community and neighbors.   Santé is a short film about three estranged siblings who must decide where to spread their dysfunctional father’s remains over the course of a holiday weekend. Written, produced, and directed by Taylor D. Mason, the film premiered at the Black Harvest Film Festival in Chicago in 2022. Pictures Only is set in 1950s Bronzeville. Louise Parker is facing eviction from her home. Desperate to keep her independence and status, she is introduced to a lucrative performing opportunity. After being offered a promotion, she is left with two choices, become the headliner, or allow her family to lose everything. Sign me up Black History and Botany Tours with Urban Roots Teen Docents Wednesday, 2/22; 3:30-4:30pm Sunday, 2/26; 1pm, 1:30pm, 2pm, 2:30pm Free Come learn about Black History through a free, interactive tour with Urban Roots teen docents! Many of the plants growing in the Conservatory have deep significance to Black history, and the ways we think about horticulture has been shaped by so many Black scientists, artists, and thinkers. Learn more from these incredible teens about the ways they have woven together stories and info on botany, ecology, horticulture and Black culture and history to honor the plants, people and their legacies. Plant Sale Planning a Natural Dye Garden Saturday, 3/4; 10am-12pm Cost: $40 / $32 Member or Volunteer Scholarships available During this workshop instructor Kristin Field will share with participants growing instructions (seeding, spacing, transplanting, and care during the growing season) for the following natural dye plants: marigolds, japanese indigo, coreopsis, sulfur cosmos, scabiosa, dyer's chamomile, hopi sunflowers, madder. Kristin will also share information on harvesting tips & where to buy dye plant seeds, lead participants through an example garden plan, and give participants an opportunity to create their own garden map. Register Virtual Beekeeping Lecture with Dr. Katie Lee Wednesday, 2/8; 6:30pm-8pm Free with registration; Donations Accepted Do healthy queens lead to healthy colonies? The ability to predict the downfall of a queen can help a beekeeper make the management decision to replace a queen or leave her be. This talk covers what queen failure looks like, if colony signs like brood pattern can help beekeepers read the health of a queen, and the impact of queen age on the productiveness of a colony. Dr. Lee presented preliminary results from her research into queen and colony health in November 2021 and this lecture will have updated info and more field data from 2022. In his presentation he will share ways he has adapted his beekeeping to his physical ability and future plans to continue to improve the adaptability of his apiary to his physical ability.
