New Leadership
In January, my fellow commissioners elected me to serve a two-year term as Vice President of the Board of Commissioners. I am grateful to them for entrusting me with this significant leadership role in the MWRD.

In my capacity as Vice President, my focus will remain on promoting environmental justice awareness throughout Cook County. Additionally, I will endeavor to enhance communities' access to open green spaces and implement further green infrastructure projects to conserve water.
EPA's

Local Government Advisory Committee

Appointment
The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Administrator Michael S. Regan appointed me to serve on the EPA's Local Government Advisory Committee (LGAC), which oversees the implementation of public health and environmental programs ensuring Americans have clean air and water, safe drinking water, and proper waste disposal.

In my position on the committee, I am enthusiastic about collaborating with community leaders to enhance environmental protections at both state and federal levels. My goal is to raise awareness of crucial issues affecting our water supply and safeguard public health and the environment for generations to come.
Black History Month
Throughout February, the Metropolitican Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago celebrates Black History Month to highlight our commitment to diversity and to support and honor the achievements within the Black community.

This month, the district held its 4th Annual Pan-African Flag Raising Ceremony at the Barbara J. McGowan Main Office Building and all seven of our plants. In addition, we held an Environmental Justice Panel Discussion with a range of community organizers and leaders to hear their perspectives on the importance of advocating for environmental equity. Lastly, we hosted a virtual roundtable to discuss environmental justice issues and how community leaders can advocate for equity in contracting.
Board Room Update
The Board of Commissioners honored Shermann Thomas
(6figga_dilla) (https://www.instagram.com/6figga_dilla/?hl=en) , also known as the Chicago Urban Historian. Shermann has become hugely popular on multiple social media platforms for his creation of sixty second videos that share Chicago’s unique history. Through his narration of historic Chicago events and figures, Mr. Thomas seeks to impart that Chicago is a vibrant and thriving city full of mystery and worthy of admiration.

Dixmoor Water Distribution
The Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago Commissioners and employees raised over $2,300 last year to help residents of the Village of Dixmoor who continue to face drinking water challenges. Through this fundraising effort, MWRDGC Commissioners and Staff purchased and distributed 840 cases of bottled water for the residents of Dixmoor.
18th Annual

Chicago Food Justice Summit
Thank you to the Chicago Food Policy Action Council for hosting me at the 18th annual Chicago Food Justice Summit. It was great to see so many partners back together again working on food system issues for the Chicago region.

News
I recently wrote an op-ed (https://chicagodefender.com/addressing-environmental-justice-through-federal-leadership-local-implementation-and-community-activism/) in the Chicago Defender about the need to address environmental injustice and crumbling infrastructure in low-income communities through federal legislation such as the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA), and the Bipartisan Infrastructure Act (BIA). Additionally, the article emphasized my advocacy for the residents of Cook County to benefit from these investments.
