EVENTS & PROGRAMS Autogenerated Closed Captioning Is Available At Our Virtual Programs PNC Mobile Learning Adventure Saturday, October 7; 11am-2pm Free Join us for a morning of family fun as we host PNC's Mobile Learning Adventure (MLA). This outdoor traveling exhibit provides an opportunity for parents and caregivers to learn about the importance of early childhood education while they engage in fun activities with their children. The MLA features a Match Board, Making Choices Disc Run, Paper Hat Occupation Station, When I Grow Up Photo Station, Story Telling Tree, and Giveaway Table! Book A Visit Beginning Beekeeping Class Saturday, October 7 or Sunday, November 5 9am-2pm Spend the day with our Head Beekeeper, Marcin Matelski, to learn the basics of beekeeping: equipment, bee biology and behavior, colony management, and hive products. This comprehensive lecture-based class is a prerequisite for joining the GPCA volunteer beekeeper program. These classes tend to fill up quickly, so be sure to register early. Pre-registration is required. Register Fall Bilingual Tree ID Walk Friday, October 20; 10am-11:30am Free, donations welcome Join us in person for a walk around the Conservatory grounds to learn about trees! This in-person tree ID Walk will be hosted in both English and Spanish. We will explore the trees of beautiful and historic Garfield Park. Ask A Master Gardener Origami Open House Saturday, October 14; 12pm-3pm Free On the 2nd Saturday of the month the Chicago Area Origami Society presents a free drop-in Origami Open House to our visitors. Adults and kids accompanied by an adult are welcome. Free and open to the public. Registration is not required. If you’d like to visit the Conservatory before or after joining this program, please book a reservation. Bonsai w/ Chicago Bonsai Club Wednesday, October 18; 6pm-7:30pm Free Learn about the ancient art of growing bonsai from the Chicago Bonsai Club, a chapter of the Midwest Bonsai Society. Bring your bonsai trees to work on or just come to watch. The meeting is open to any interested adults, drop-in anytime from 6pm-7:30pm in the Classroom. Potting soil and wire will be provided, and some plant materials and pots will be available at a nominal cost. NATURE EDUCATION PROGRAMS Urban Roots Recruiting for Fall Program The Urban Roots Teen Environmental Justice Program is recruiting for the Fall 2023 Program. The program starts on Wednesday, October 25th, and will take place on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday afternoons. Contact Gech Oparah for more information. Urban Roots engages students from Al Raby and surrounding high schools in a long-term relationship with the Conservatory, where they experience the joy and tranquility of time spent in nature while building knowledge and skills that support social emotional learning, identity development and personal growth. Urban Roots Teen Environmental Justice Program is a paid, seasonal employment opportunity designed to develop high school students into guides for the Garfield Park Conservatory and environmental agents of change. The program helps develop teens into civic leaders and better versions of themselves through identity development and several life skill enrichment activities. As an Urban Roots docent and environmental activist, candidates will be introduced to: fundamental plant science, conservation education, financial literacy, urban gardening, environmental justice and green space workforce exposure. We will learn about plants, make art projects, conduct experiments to better understand nature, and much more! Through the program, volunteer Community Stewards and other volunteers work collaboratively with Chicago Park District staff and contractors to protect, maintain, and restore the natural integrity of their adopted natural area.
