CCGA Resources Committee Container Workshop and NASA
The Resources Container Workshop Saturday, January 12 brought community gardeners into the Austin Greenhouse to encourage them to put air cleaning plants in their homes. The message was taken home in good-looking mixed indoor containers with a lively pop of color and greenery. Resources wants gardeners to know that their homes and offices may have something in common with a NASA spaceship! Unfortunately it’s not a view of the moon, it may be poor air quality. Indoor air pollutants have been ranked among the top five environmental risks to public health. Stagnant indoor environments allow pollutants to build up and stick around in greater amounts than we humans should be breathing in, hence the workshop. Participants created the bowls using dracaena for effect, with trailing small-leafed plants that spilled over the edges and added color and leaf ornament with coleus. Everyone heard a brief talk on indoor container plant choices, preparation, and care.
There are more of these air filtering plants held at the Austin Greenhouse for another workshop at a later date, especially if we hear that you’re interested! Contact the Resources Team at resources@chicagocommunitygardens.org.
